The Cincinnati Bengals weren’t the only team dependent on the Denver Broncos’ loss in the Week 18 game to qualify for the playoffs; the Miami Dolphins were praying together for the Kansas City Chiefs. But unlike the Bengals, the Dolphins were eliminated from playoff contention even after they suffered a poor loss of 32-20 at the hands of the New York Jets.

While several factors contributed to the Dolphins’ disappointing 8-9 record this season, sports analyst Shannon Sharpe attributed their failure to reach the playoffs primarily to a lack of discipline within the team despite their talented roster.

In the latest edition of his Nightcap show, Sharpe emphasized that discipline is fundamental for any successful team but the Dolphins failed to do so. He argued that the foundation for victory is laid during the week through consistent practice and punctuality, which he saw being compromised in Miami.

You can’t be late for meetings. Late to practice? Come on guys! But see that just goes to show, that explains why team don’t win. See y’all think it’s all about the game. All fans see is the game. Games are won Monday through Friday because of discipline. It requires you to get your a** to practice on time. Get your a** to meeting on time. That’s the discipline that you’ll need to display come Sunday in order to win.

In addition to discipline issues, the Dolphins faced significant challenges due to injuries, particularly to their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Throughout the 2024 season, he missed several games due to his third recorded concussion, which clearly impacted the team’s performance.

Miami Dolphins prioritize quarterback depth as offseason approaches

The signal-caller’s concussion concerned everyone this season and though Tagovailoa isn’t thinking of hanging his cleats just yet, the Dolphins have begun preparing for his successor. With the conclusion of the 2024 regular season, the Dolphins have begun their quest for a good backup quarterback, as General Manager Chris Grier said.

It will be a position that we will focus on this offseason. Every stone will be unturned at that position, including in the [NFL] Draft.

Chris Grier said during a press conference on Tuesday

Based on Grier’s words, it appears learned from the shortcomings of this season. As they emphazised the need for better support in the roster in case their starting Tagovolia gets injured as he did later in the season and missed two more games.
