Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is enjoying one hell of a rookie season. He has been at the forefront of the renewed Commanders, who are cruising through the season’s first five games.

The Commanders have won four games and lead the NFC East ahead of Super Bowl hopefuls, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles. After a Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Commanders bounced back gracefully. Daniels and Commanders have bested the likes of Joe Burrow and Deshaun Watson, two of the ‘highly-paid’ quarterbacks in their journey to the top.

After a dismal 2023 season, ending with a losing record, Josh Harris brought in some new faces. Harris, who bought the Commanders in 2023, roped in Adam Peters as the GM, Dan Quinn as the head coach, and Kliff Kingsbury as OC. In the 2024 NFL Draft, they drafted Jayden Daniels from LSU as second overall to fill the quarterback needs.

Daniels has exceeded expectations since then, making the Commanders a potential winner. In five weeks, Daniels is one of the prominent names in the MVP talks.

The last time a rookie won the MVP was in 1957 by Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns. Since then, CJ Stroud of Houston Texans came close in the race in 2023. A season later, Daniels seems to having a better season than Stroud. Speaking on First Take, Shannon Sharpe (and many others) praised the rookie on his confident plays.

What’s the likelihood one of these rookie quarterbacks putting together a season like CJ Stroud had last year… He doin’ it better. Because with CJ, it took him about 4 or 5 weeksHe does not play like a rookie. The moment isn’t too big for him.

Shannon Sharpe said

In five games, Daniels has a pass completion percentage of 77.1 for 1135 passing yards, while throwing for 4 touchdowns. He also boasts 300 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Stroud had a pass completion rate of 61.3 for 1461 yards with seven touchdowns in his first five career games.

Jayden Daniels threatens Josh Allen’s QBR Power Rankings

Each week, ESPN assigns quarterbacks a QBR (Quarterback Rating) based on their most recent performance. This metric is designed to account for all aspects of a quarterback’s contributions to a team’s success, factoring in passing, rushing, turnovers, and penalties.

After a solid win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, Jayden Daniels has inched closer to leader Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. The rookie recorded another Top 10 QBR performance in Week 5. He was ranked eighth with a score of 75.6 in the Week 5 list, led by another rookie, Caleb Williams. Meanwhile, Denver Broncos rookie QB Bo Nix was ranked 26th on the list despite a win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ahead of Week 6, Josh Allen (77.6) leads the total QBR Power Ranking list, followed by Burrow (73.6) of Cincinnati Bengals. A consistent Jayden Daniels (73.2) follows close behind.

The reigning MVP Lamar Jackson, whom Daniels is compared to, is ranked sixth on the list. Daniels and the Commanders are playing Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens in the coming week.
