Shaquille O'Neal praises Steph Curry

Shaquille O’Neal has been known to be unapologetic when it comes to dissecting player contracts. However, the case was different when Stephen Curry signed a massive contract extension with the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs are set to pay Stephen Curry over $60 million for the upcoming season.

The Warriors extended Curry back in 2022 to a 4-year $215 million contract. This move comes as a no-brainer for Shaq who was more than happy to anoint the sharpshooter to be of that caliber.

A guy like Steph Curry when you say $60 million, the only thing you can say is ‘Okay’ … alright what do you want me to say? yeah, he deserves every stinking penny of it … 60 million to Steph, Shaq approves.

Shaquille O’Neal said in an interview with USA Today Sports

Shaquille O’Neal approved Curry’s game, even putting him in the Top 10 of all-time conversation. ‘The Big Diesel’ explained that Curry belonged to an exclusive group of players who could command this type of money. According to Shaq, even $178 million guaranteed over the next three seasons for one year seems fine for the sharpshooter.

The Lakers legend has been critical of players of the current generation dating back to his incident with Rudy Gobert. He has been expressively dismissing the exorbitant amount of salary current players are earning, saying how jealous he is of today’s salary environment. For context, Shaquille O’Neal only earned $292 million over his career in the NBA.

Shaquille O’Neal could’ve commanded record-breaking contracts in today’s NBA

Shaq was one of the greatest forces that the hardwood had ever seen. As previously mentioned, he only commanded what would be a normal rookie-max extension in 2024. A high number of contracts are just thrown around for average stars in contrast to Shaq’s era, where supermax extensions were non-existent.

Shaq commented on the salary situation of the league. While speaking on The Big Podcast, O’Neal claimed that he would be making better money that Rudy Gobert even at 42, given the player’s stats.

If I were 42, I’d be making Rudy Gobert money. Twelve points and eight rebounds? I could do that s*** right now, it’s a fact not a diss … making $250 million … averaging twelve points.

Shaquille O’Neal said

Recently, the league experienced a pay hike where the Boston Celtics duo became the beneficiary. Both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown earned over $300 million each for their contract extension. Although O’Neal might be shy in his NBA earnings, he had racked up over $800 million dollar in his business ventures and would be wealthy enough for the foreseeable future.
