NBA fans often have debates regarding the best player in the league. However, not many fans give thought to discussing the worst player in the NBA. That said, this is exactly what happened recently on the GOAT Talk podcast featuring NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
The former Los Angeles Lakers legend gave his take on the worst players in the NBA. For those who know O’Neal, his response was neither shocking nor unexpected.
Rudy Gobert and Ben Simmons is another bum. You know why? Because if you sign a contract for $250 million, show me $250 million...You got guys like him that f**k the system over there, making all this money and they can't f***ing play.Shaquille O’Neal on the GOAT Talk
O’Neal has won almost everything in his illustrious career. As a four-time champion, former MVP, and 15-time All-Star, he possesses greater credibility than most to talk about the sport and the players that currently dominate it. The man earned more than $120 million during his career and reached a level of success that has yet to be matched.
That said, O’Neal has always been critical of Rudy Gobert in the past too. Also, the former Lakers legend once claimed that Gobert did not deserve his 2023 DPOY award. However, the French center is one of the league’s finest players, having won four Defensive Player of the Year awards, four All-NBA selections, and three All-Star appearances. Despite this, Gobert makes O’Neal’s list of the worst players in the NBA.
Shaquille O’Neal has been critical of Rudy Gobert in the past
Shaquille O’Neal does not like Rudy Gobert, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves. As such, O’Neal has been slandering the Timberwolves center throughout his career. On “The Big Podcast” earlier this year, O’Neal stated that he has never been a fan of Gobert’s defensive ability, even claiming that Gobert is not a great defensive player in the NBA.
I never thought he was a great defensive player, either. See, what it is, is there's not a lot of centers that are making him play defense. Like, he’s not doing that s--- against [Nikola Jokić], because he has to be engaged. But when he’s going against another guy, he’s 7' 6", of course if you lay it up he’s going to block it.Shaquille O’Neal on the Big Podcast
Gobert has averaged 13.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game for Minnesota over the last two seasons, shooting 66%. Hence, one could argue with O’Neal’s assessment that Gobert is not a superb NBA defender. Being elected Defensive Player of the Year four times and continuing to play for his side in important league games cannot be a coincidence. It will be interesting to watch how Rudy Gobert will perform in the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
