Sanju Samson has been a player the Indian team management has put their faith in for many years with returns. Despite his great performances in the IPL and the domestic circuit, he has been overlooked, but Kerala politician Shashi Tharoor has called for him to captain the national team.
Currently captaining Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sanju Samson has led the team to seven out of eight wins. The team currently stands at the top of the table and are favorites to win the IPL as well. Samson is consistently performing with the bat as well, hitting 314 runs in eight innings with an average of 62.8 and a strike rate of 152.43.
After RR’s win over Mumbai Indians on 22nd April, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh believed Samson should walk into the Indian team as the keeper. He added that Samson needs to be groomed as the next Indian T20 captain.
Tharoor agreed with Singh and called for Samson to return to the Indian side. He believes Samson’s return to the Indian T20 team is overdue and he didn’t get the “selectoral breaks” he deserves. He also claimed Samson is the best wicket-keeper batted in the IPL.
World Cup-winning captain lauds Sanju Samson, claims he doesn’t let ego come in the way
Sanju Samson has been performing well as a keeper, batter and captain in the ongoing 2024 IPL. Former Australian captain, Aaron Finch, is impressed by Samson’s maturity and is happy he is batting without any ego.
Yeah it certainly has, he's been playing really mature innings and that's what is required for the team. I think in times of T20 cricket, the ego of the batsman can get in the way of what the team needs sometimes but he's been playing each and every situation exactly how it's needed to be done.Aaron Finch on Star Sports
Samson and RR currently have 14 points in eight matches, with only one game lost. They will now play on 27th April against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium.
