Shawne Merriman could not believe that Kelly Stafford would go live and reveal that she knowingly dated another guy to make Matthew Stafford jealous. The retired NFL linebacker was minding his own business when he noticed Stafford’s interview with Kaitlyn Bristowe on social media.

Stafford discussed the initial days of her trying to win over the Georgia Bulldogs starting quarterback. However, he wasn’t interested in a relationship and preferred to focus on improving his gameplay. 

Kelly devised a sneaky plan and approached Matthew Stafford‘s backup in the Bulldogs, to piss him off. They immediately hooked up, and because the boys shared the dorm, Stafford could often see her parking her car near their building.

Her plan was working, and one day, Stafford tried to warn her that she shouldn’t date his backup. She realized her plan worked, but continued her charade a bit longer before completely winning Stafford over.

The interview went viral, and Shawne Merriman was part of the group who thought Kelly Stafford shouldn’t have refrained from revealing such private stories after 10 years of marriage. Merriman showed sympathy for Matthew Stafford on X (Twitter).

The former San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills pass rusher may have retraced his past through Kelly’s confession. In 2009, just four years after making his debut in the NFL, his former girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, falsely accused him of choking and restraining her.

The police arrested him but he was quickly released after they failed to produce any evidence against him. Merriman later sued Tequila, alleging intentional interference with contracts, unfair competition, and trademark infringement.

The 40-year-old claimed that Tequila improperly used his own “Lights Out” logo and, without his knowledge, disrupted negotiations with Wall Mart. The court ordered her to pay $2 million, which she failed to comply with. In a surprising turn of events, both parties then jointly moved to court and agreed to dismiss the case.

Although there’s no clear indication why Merriman suddenly felt the need to speak up against Stafford, past events could have influenced his motive. Regardless, Shawne Merriman played eight seasons in the NFL, racking up 258 tackles, 46 sacks, forced fumbles, four forced returns, and one interception.

After retiring in March 2013, Merriman tried various ventures. He appeared on MTV’s The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros. Then, trying out his luck in wrestling, he made his debut at a WrestleMania XXX pre-show. In 2019, Merriman announced starting his own MMA foundation, Lights Out Xtreme Fighting.
