The entire footballing world is heartbroken following the unfortunate single-vehicle crash claiming the lives of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva on Thursday in Spain. Liverpool superfan and former WWE Champion Sheamus is also mourning the loss and has posted a heartfelt note for Jota.
What would hurt even more is the fact that Jota got married to his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22 last month. She was the one whom the police called in to identify the dead bodies, per media reports. Moreover, the Portuguese star recently lifted the Premier League with his club and played a vital role in their domestic triumph.
Circling back to Sheamus’ affinity with the LFC, he calls it a home away from home. He told the ECHO back in May that he feels it’s almost like his Irish hometown of Dublin. The former WWE Champion’s penchant for the Reds has only grown tenfold ever since his uncle would bring some LFC memorabilia for him when he was barely eight. Taking to his X account, Sheamus wrote, “Shocked & heartbroken. Rest in peace, Diogo. You’ll never walk alone.”

Speaking of his current status in WWE, the red-headed Irishman is feuding with Rusev. They collided in a ring-shaking singles affair on this week’s Raw. In what was hailed as one of the most physical WWE matches all year, the Irish grappler went down fighting to his Bulgarian counterpart. Impressed by their chemistry, the fans are hoping for these two to run it back.
Why did Sheamus miss this year’s WrestleMania?
Sheamus might be back to dish out bangers on a weekly basis. However, ‘The Great White’ was snubbed out of competing at this year’s WrestleMania. It was the second year on the trot for him being on the sidelines while WWE’s biggest show was going on. Reflecting on it, the former League of Nations member told the Daily Mail that he was indeed gutted to have not made the cut for ‘The Show of Shows’ in Las Vegas.

The former world champion affirmed that he’s extremely passionate about his job and wants to stay in the mix as long as his body responds well to the grind. Speaking of what Sheamus pitched in front of WWE to include him in a match at Mania was a shot at the Intercontinental Championship. However, he quipped that maybe the company was tired of his IC title obsession and decided to shun him.
But there’s a reason why ‘The Celtic Warrior’ keeps bringing up the IC title. It’s the only accolade that has eluded Sheamus his entire WWE career. The Irishman fought tooth and nail against Gunther at a time the latter held it for a record-setting 666 days. They went to war a number of times, but the Austrian juggernaut couldn’t be uprooted. It’ll be interesting to see if Sheamus and Gunther get to mix it up again in the future.
Sheamus recalls convincing Triple H for an epic clash with Gunther
The first time Sheamus wrestled Gunther one-on-one was at WWE Clash at the Castle in 2022. It’s where ‘The Ring General’ reassembled the Imperium, comprising himself, Ludwig Kaiser, and Giovanni Vinci. Whereas the Irish wrestler was backed by the likes of Pete Dunne and Ridge Holland.

‘The Celtic Warrior’ and ‘The Ring General’ put on an IC title match for the ages at the Principality Stadium in Wales. Even Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter rated it five stars. But the instant classic wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for Sheamus directly talking to WWE CCO Triple H about it.
The former WWE Champion made the revelation on Pat McAfee’s show last year. In hindsight, it’ll go down as one of the greatest matches of Sheamus’ entire wrestling career. Even at 47 years of age, the latter is putting his peers to shame by performing at the highest level.
