Ahead of his much-anticipated WWE main roster debut, the fans knew Gunther was going to be a force to be reckoned with. However, what really put him on the map was his match with Sheamus in 2022. The Ring General met The Celtic Warrior at Clash at the Castle with the Intercontinental title on the line. After brutalizing each other, it was the Austrian who triumphed in a showdown that was awarded a five-star rating by Dave Meltzer.

However, this match was never supposed to happen. Sheamus made the revelation while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show. He affirmed that wrestling Gunther in Wales is very special to him. And why not? The entire Principality Stadium rose in unison to applaud the Irishman despite his loss that night. But it wouldn’t have been made possible if The Celtic Warrior didn’t approach Triple H about it.

The 46-year-old went back-and-forth with the WWE Chief Content Officer, and eventually they ended up on the same page. Sheamus credited Hunter for making the match happen. At one point, the veteran superstar was upset with WWE for wasting the momentum he had coming off that barn burner with the former NXT UK Champion.

The Gunther match to me is very special. That match wasn’t even supposed to happen.....I talked to Hunter about it, we spitballed back and forth, and then he went and made the match.

Even though Sheamus has had some encounters with the Imperium boss afterwards as well, he’s yet to get the better of the 2024 King of the Ring. The Great White was actively pursuing the one title that has eluded him his entire career—the Intercontinental Championship. However, props to Gunther that he never let the former League of Nations member cut through him.

Gunther faces tall task ahead with Randy Orton eyeing to dethrone him in Berlin

This year at SummerSlam, Gunther ousted Damian Priest to win the world title for the very first time in WWE. But the smile on his face didn’t get the chance to settle. Randy Orton emerged as his challenger. They’re set to slug it out next weekend at Bash in Berlin as The Ring General defends the World Heavyweight title against Orton.

Last week on Raw, The Viper saw off an appetizer of what’s to come in Germany. Randy beat Ludwig Kaiser, who was entrusted with the duty of softening up The Apex Predator by Gunther. Kaiser did the damage but couldn’t down the 14-time World Champion.

After the match, the champ and the soon-to-be challenger at Bash in Berlin brawled to end the show. Things have gotten extremely personal between Orton and Gunther as the latter has adjudged The Legend Killer as the biggest screw-up of the Orton family.
