At Backlash, WWE confirmed the matches for the first round of the King of the Ring tournament. Without a doubt, the third bout of the trilogy between Sheamus and Gunther caught the most attention online. The two rivals will be going head-to-head on tonight’s episode of Raw. However, ahead of their battle, the former WWE Champion compared his opponent to Adolf Hitler.
In a now-deleted post, the Celtic Warrior took to X to draw comparisons between The Ring General and the controversial figure. First, he mentioned how both are of Austrian origin. Furthermore, Sheamus hilariously trolled the former Intercontinental Champion for having a bad haircut. The recently returned Superstar then took a jab at the Imperium leader’s recent faction split.
Sheamus pointed out how, just like Hitler, Gunther’s closest ally is a German, Ludwig Kaiser. And he also mentioned that the 36-year-old star betrayed an Italian ally, Giovanni Vinci. To avoid any controversy, The Great White seemingly thought it was better to delete the post. However, the WWE Universe thought otherwise.
The rivalry between Sheamus and Gunther dates back to the summer of 2022. At Clash At The Castle, the duo put on a classic in front of the Cardiff crowd. The two would run it back at WrestleMania 39, this time with a third competitor, Drew McIntyre.
Despite all of his efforts, Sheamus fell short of his dream of becoming a Grand Slam Champion. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether he avenges the losses by breaking Gunther’s hopes of becoming King of the Ring.
Gunther is “destined” to meet another rival on Raw
One of the major moments from last week’s Draft was Ilja Dragunov‘s move to Monday nights. Instantly, fans’ excitement grew at the possibility of the NXT callup reigniting his rivalry with Gunther. Having said that, The Mad Dragon commented on being on the same brand as the former Intercontinental Champion.
Dragunov called it “destiny” for the rivals to cross paths on Raw. Weeks ago, The Ring General opined on the 30-year-old star, seemingly asserting that they would be better opponents than teammates. As mentioned above, Gunther is vying to be crowned King of the Ring.
Interestingly, the former NXT Champion will be competing for the prestigious honor as well. Dragunov will be squaring off against Ricochet in the first round on tonight’s edition of Raw. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether the two revisit their rivalry in the coming weeks during the tournament.
