The Colorado Buffaloes seem to have gotten into another controversy that overshadowed their 41-27 victory against Texas Tech. Although this time the controversy did not stem from any actions or statements made by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, he did engage with fans by delivering a fitting response.

It all started when a store labeled Red Raiders Outfitter had organized a “Celebrate America” theme for the Week 11 matchup between the Buffs and Texas. However, the Buffaloes opposed licensing any product featuring the flag of the United States alongside either team’s logo, as store owner Stephen Spiegelberg shared.

We pressed a little bit more and we were told they won’t be licensing a product that had an American flag on it. We refuse to do that because Colorado would receive financial benefit from those shirts. And we don’t think that anybody has the right to limit the use of the American flag in this great nation.”

Stephen Spiegelberg said per KCBD-TV

Tension further escalated when it was revealed that Texas Tech had agreed to the design and Colorado asked Spielberg to remove the American flag, a request he refused.

Colorado Athletic Director Rick George attempted to clear the misunderstanding by stating that the team’s refusal was not related to the American flag, asserting that they have licensed numerous products featuring the flag.

Shedeur Sanders breaks silence amidst disturbing accusations from opposing fans

Since the news broke into the media, Colorado’s patriotism has faced significant scrutiny and criticism all across social media. Quarterback Sanders had largely avoided the controversy until now when the opposing fanbase from Week 11 made a “disturbing” accusation about him and his team, which prompted him to respond.

It’s like, CU don’t like the flag or something? C’mon bruh, that’s sick at this point. Y’all just fishing for content at this point. So, that was very disturbing. What I feel bad for, it’s genuine people that [are] out there that read the media that don’t know us, you know, and they believe the type of lies… the narrative.

While calling out the Texas Tech fans after defeating the team at a solid 41-27, the star quarterback expressed disappointment in those who judged the Buffaloes based on comments from those who do not like Coach Prime, Deion Sanders.

Additionally, the University of Colorado issued a statement regarding this through a spokesperson, clarifying that the team’s decision to decline to license the product was not influenced by the ‘Celebrate America’s theme.’
