The Cleveland Browns quarterback contest has now shifted from starter to backup contests. On Monday, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced veteran Joe Flacco as the starter for their opening clash against the Cincinnati Bengals. The backup spots, which are now up for grabs, will be contested between Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders, despite initial first overall rumors, had a draft slide, falling to the fifth round. Despite the draft slide, Sanders has proven himself to be a starter with phenomenal performance in the Browns’ first preseason game. However, it was not even enough for him to be named ahead of fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel or Pickett.
Amid the low ranking in the depth chart, The Herd’s Colin Cowherd issued a reality check to the quarterback as he tries to fight to climb up. Even before the draft, the media had noted that the celebrity father and his huge media presence might create problems for him.
Cowherd, in a recent appearance on his show, differentiated between Sanders and Gabriel. Cowherd noted that Gabriel has a nice temperament compared to Sanders’ goofy and silly nature, while pointing out the former’s small stature as a disadvantage. He further noted that the outgoing life of a party character doesn’t help one advance in their football career.
What NFL GMs really want from quarterbacks, they want you to be Andrew Luck. Great and boring. Brady was mostly boring when he played. If you’re not great, and neither one of these quarterbacks is, you can’t be the life of the party.

Cleveland not the best fit for Shedeur Sanders
After a rocky start to his career as a quarterback, Shedeur Sanders had a golden chance to showcase his talents. The quarterback excelled, but also sustained an oblique injury, which has now turned into a hindrance to his availability for practice.

Cleveland Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot tweeted that the quarterback would miss practice and any updates about his availability would only be known a day later.

Amid the depth chart slide and injury, a CBS insider, Pete Prisco, revealed that they think Sanders and the Browns training camp will part ways after the training camp.
What if they decided they wanted to get rid of one of the rookies? And the rookie that they probably get rid of will be the one that they took in the fifth round.

Prisco later questioned whether there’s a market for Sanders or if he will end up on the Browns or any other practice squad. The insider also pitched in some feelings about another Browns QB and their future, Kenny Pickett.
Pickett would probably be the guy that would be cut or traded because if you look at it, you have a veteran and you have two young quarterbacks, guys you want to look at down the road if Flacco doesn’t make it work early in the season.
Prisco was sure of one thing, though. He claimed that there’s no sense in keeping two veterans and two rookies on the same squad.
