Odds are stacked against Dillon Gabriel even though he is drafted two rounds ahead of Shedeur Sanders. The Colorado graduate came with an abundance of fan following, and any slip-up from Gabriel was bound to rub people the wrong way.
That’s exactly what happened following the Browns’ preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Gabriel’s “There are entertainers, and there are competitors” statement was perceived as a veiled dig at Sanders, who missed the fixture due to an oblique injury.
Gabriel came under severe criticism for his choice of words. Later, he cleared the air. He never intended to confront Sanders. In fact, his statement wasn’t even meant for his fellow rookie and teammate.
According to Daniel Oyefusi, Gabriel reportedly approached Sanders on the plane and explained the entire dilemma. When reporters grilled him for details, a smiling Sanders thanked the Almighty for making him mentally and emotionally strong enough to deal with any kind of harsh words.
I don’t even think about anything. Words or anything, you know, at this point, can’t do anything to me… It is what it is. I spoke with him. He told me on the plane. He came up to me and was like, ‘Nah, bro, that wasn’t at you. I see how they’re trying to spin it.’ I’m not gonna lie, I’m not tripping, regardless of whatever it was. Nobody’s words or anything affect me.

The Browns boast an awful track record of nurturing young quarterbacks. It’s in their best interest to avoid creating meaningless clutter among their six shot-callers. So far, Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry have managed to keep the locker room under control, but their skills will be put to the test once the regular season begins.
Do the Browns trust Dillon Gabriel more than Shedeur Sanders?
Throughout the offseason, the Browns’ coaching team endured media scrutiny for barring Sanders from taking first-team reps. Despite the pressure, he was limited to playing catch with the second and third stringers.

Fans thought the coaches would soften up a little after Sanders led the Browns to a win over the Carolina Panthers in his debut game. He threw two touchdowns and had a quarterback rating of 111.79.
But the situation stayed the same. While Gabriel enjoyed first-team snaps, Sanders was forced to practice with benchwarmers. Although it could appear that Stefanski is favoring Gabriel because he was selected before Sanders, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic suggested that Stefanski has a strategy in place.
The TruMedia data revealed that the Browns used “pre-snap motion 45 percent of the time with Gabriel against the Philadelphia Eagles.” Sanders, on the other hand, only used pre-snap motion 31 percent of the time.
NFL’s NextGen Stats documented that “Gabriel was three of four on [tight-window throws] against the Eagles,” while “Sanders was zero for four on tight-window throws against the Panthers.”

Stefanski’s play-calling made the best use of the strengths and weaknesses of both rookies. Regardless, neither will be the starter for the Browns’ week one fixture against the Cincinnati Bengals. That responsibility went to 40-year-old Joe Flacco.
There’s a big question mark on Kenny Pickett. Berry traded for the former Steelers and Eagles quarterback, but he has taken zero snaps in the preseason because of a sore hamstring. Although nothing is set in stone, he has quickly become the favorite to be traded before the roster cut.
The Browns still have a friendly game before the regular season kicks off. The Los Angeles Rams are scheduled to travel to the Dawg Pound for a blockbuster finale.
