Did Shedeur Sanders play his final game for the Cleveland Browns on Saturday? Sanders doesn’t believe that. In fact, the rookie quarterback expressed confidence in his chances of making the Browns’ final 53-man roster.

Sanders played a handful of snaps against the Los Angeles Rams in the Browns’ third and final preseason fixture. Aside from a few shaky moments, his contribution to the team’s total was minimal.

He was replaced before the two-minute warning in the final quarter in favor of Tyler Huntley. The Browns won the game to remain undefeated heading into the 2025 regular season.

Sanders posted 3 completions for 14 yards and lost the ball on one occasion. After the game, NFL Network’s Bridget Condon caught up with the 23-year-old in the Browns locker room to ask him about his chances of making the roster.

Obviously [I will make it].

Shedeur Sanders replied

Sanders gave Browns fans a glimpse of his prowess with a football in the preseason win over the Panthers.

I think overall, as a player, I feel like I’ve put in the work. I feel like everything I do, I try to do it to my best, and that’s all you can ask for.

Shedeur Sanders added

Sanders is well aware that he’s not the only one competing for a place on the team.

If you ask anybody on the team, would they feel like they belong, they belong in their own eyes… I feel like I do, but I’m my own player. I think about myself in high regard.

The Browns drafted Sanders 144th overall in the fifth round. However, he was not a run of the mill third day draft pick. Sanders arrived at the Browns’ facility with a massive fan following and a chip on his shoulder.

To everyone’s surprise, the 23-year-old left all feelings of entitlement in college. He gradually gained the respect of his Browns teammates.

[On Wednesday] I asked him [Joe Flacco], ‘But doesn’t Shedeur put a little bit of a fresh spin on it for you?’ And he said, ‘Yes, he does.’ “Those two guys are often seen laughing together and talking, and I think Shedeur is keeping it light for a lot of people inside the building.

Sanders is also learning a lot from the Super Bowl winner.

I see Joe do something, and I’m like, ‘Alright, bro. I’m gonna try that.’ And then I do it and it’s cool cause I’m like, ‘Hey, bruh I did this cause I seen you do it.’ And then he’ll be smiling like a proud dad.

Browns’ general manager updated on the quarterback situation

Sanders isn’t the only quarterback eyeing a roster spot in Cleveland. Veterans Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookie Dillon Gabriel have the same goal.

Flacco’s place is guaranteed, as being named the quintessential QB1. Additionally, he knows Kevin Stefanski’s system because he played in it during the 2023 season. The Browns traded for Pickett in the offseason and later drafted Gabriel in the third.

They also have Deshaun Watson and Huntley to deal with. Watson will likely be placed on a season-long injured reserve list while Huntley gets cut.

Honestly, it’s not much of a decision for us. All four guys have done what we’ve asked… We have a room that we like all the guys in there. We don’t really see that as a problem. We more see it as an opportunity.

For now, Sanders is part of the Browns. Fans have to wait until Tuesday, August 26, to be certain.

Sanders went to Jackson State after graduating from high school. After spending two years with the Cowboys, he followed his father/coach, Deion Sanders, to Colorado. He led the UC to a 9-4 finish and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl during his final year of college eligibility.
