Sheffield United gets relegated after they lose to Wolves

Sheffield United are officially relegated

After their 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield United became the first-ever team to get relegated officially from the English Premier League. Willian Jose scored the goal on the counter in the second half which was enough to seal the deal for Nuno Santos’ side at Molineux.

After Gameweek 32, the Blades have 14 points in their bag with six games remaining. The 17th placed Burnley have 33 points with a game in hand. Mathematically, Sheffield United can get up to 32 points even if they secure victories in all the games. Only Fulham and West Bromwich Albion can save their campaign.

After 2 points from 17 games, Sheffield United were tipped to get relegated. However, the victory against Manchester United was seen as a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. The team failed to capitalize on the win and couldn’t stop the rot. The club became the second-ever team to get relegated the next season after they finished in the top half of the table in the previous season.

Wolves were without Neto and failed to break the Blades down in the absence of their star player. Moreover, Boly’s flick was cleared on the goalline keeping the scoreline unchanged in the first half. However, Willian Jose did damage to Sheffield when the team scored on a counterattack. It was a disastrous way to concede a goal in the Premier League match for any side.

After the match, Nuno Esperito Santo sounded sad for Sheffield United but was optimistic about the Blades’ comeback:

We started together (with Sheffield United) in the Championship. Chris Wilder achieved promotion and their first season in the Premier League was amazing with the same players. I have big admiration for Sheffield. The character of their group of players is immense. I'm very sad, but I'm sure they'll bounce back
