Joe Burrow survived a big scare. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback took a big hit from Shemar Stewart and lived to tell the tale. On Wednesday, WCPO’s Caleb Noe reported the heart-in-mouth news from the Bengals training camp. Noe shared footage of Stewart breaking through the Bengals’ offensive line to tackle Burrow to the ground.

Although the video failed to capture the moment of impact, the player’s reaction screamed the whole story. Offensive lineman Lucas Patrick reportedly smacked Stewart’s helmet to start a light skirmish between the two.

It took a while for the heat to die down. Head coach Zac Taylor breathed a sigh of relief, seeing that no one was hurt. Later, the Bengals center Ted Karras talked about Stewart’s hit on Burrow.

I think we got a little loose from an O-line perspective today. Some things transpired that warranted a response, and Lucas delivered that. I thought we handled it well overall. It wasn’t like a shut down the practice type of scuffle. And probably about time we had one of those.

Reporters asked Karras if he was pleased with Stewart’s intensity in the training ground. Karras raved about the rookie, but at the same time, stated that it’s important to keep a cool head.

Just be smarter. … Great player. But, come on, man. That’s [Joe Burrow] all our hopes and dreams right there. And we got to be better, too. That’s on us.

Stewart adapted quickly to the defensive coordinator, Al Golden’s methods, even though he joined the Bengals’ practice in late July. Before that, he staged a three-month holdout for guaranteed pay. He eventually signed his rookie contract.

Coach Taylor assigned defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery to bring Stewart up to speed, and he responded well. Zac Taylor said (ht/Cleveland.com):

I’ve been pleased with the progress he’s been making, and I think we’ve got plenty of time to be where we want to be, especially before Week 1 against Cleveland.

With All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson still awaiting his extension, Stewart could play a vital role in the Bengals’ D from the start.

Joe Burrow had an awkward encounter with a fan

Burrow is a very busy individual. From taking reps at the Bengals training camp to expanding his inner fashionista, the Iowa native gets very little to himself, let alone for others.

The two-time NFL Comeback Player of the Year was simply minding his own business when a group of young fans gathered around him at around 2 A.M. to take photos and get an autograph. Burrow politely ignored the group and left the scene in his black SUV.

Previously, Burrow’s Bengals teammate and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase faced a similar experience. He was approached by an older female fan, and judging by her body language, she wanted something more than an autograph.

Elsewhere, Aaron Rodgers refused to sign an old game ticket for a fan at the Lake Tahoe golf tournament before training camp began. Rodgers accused the fan of being a scalper or a reseller of autographs.

Burrow played and threw two touchdowns in the Bengals’ preseason defeat to the Eagles. They will face the Commanders and the Colts in the final two friendly games before traveling to Cleveland to play the Browns in week one of the 2025 season.

Joe Burrow bagged the triple crown in 2024. He led the league in pass completions (460), passing yards (4918), and touchdowns (43). Burrow signed a five-year $275 million contract extension ($55 million per year) in 2023.
