Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal made a spectacular return to form with a game-changing four-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders, in a thrilling IPL contest. Chahal’s display earned him praise from former teammate Shimron Hetmyer, who had a ‘two-word’ reaction on social media. 

High-flying Punjab Kings recorded their fourth win of their 2025 IPL campaign, with a 16-run win over defending champions KKR. They successfully broke the record of the lowest total defended in the competition’s history, as they managed to curtail KKR’s chase of their 112-run target. PBKS also managed to surpass CSK’s long-standing record of defending 116 runs against them, in the 2009 IPL season.

Mullanpur witnessed a batting collapse, as the home team registered their lowest score of the season – just 111 runs in 15.3 overs. Harshit Rana was the star for KKR with a three-wicket haul, while spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine scalped two wickets each. For PBKS, openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya were the only batters to make it past the 20-run mark.

Interestingly, for KKR, it marked the second time this season that they managed to restrict a team to a first innings score below 120 runs. They did the same against CSK, only a week ago. While it seemed to be an easy chase for the Knights, they lost both their openers early into the match. However, skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi brought KKR back into the game, scoring some crucial runs.

By the end of the power-play, it looked as if KKR were close to securing a one-sided victory. However, Yuzvendra Chahal, who has not had the best of starts to the season, dismissed Rahane and Raghuvanshi in back-to-back overs. The 34-year-old turned the tides in favor of PBKS, as he later claimed the wickets of Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh in the 12th over of the match, to guide his side to a historic win.

The 34-year-old leg spinner, who is the IPL’s highest wicket-taker of all time, won his first Player of the Match award with his new team after the heroic display. Moreover, Rajasthan Royals’ batter and Chahal’s former teammate Shimron Hetmyer took to social media to share a picture of the spinner’s recent display. Hetmyer hailed Chahal’s bowling figures of 4-28, while labeling him as his ‘favorite person’.

Chahal and Hetmyer did share a good bond during the former’s three-year stint with RR, between 2022 and 2024. However, despite having claimed 66 wickets in 46 matches for RR, the 34-year-old spinner was released ahead of the 2025 IPL Mega Auction. Punjab Kings later secured his services for a whopping INR 18 crore.

PBKS spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had a brilliant outing against KKR, as he returned with match-winning figures of 4/28 to help his side create history by defending the IPL’s lowest total. Chahal was named Man of the Match for ending KKR’s efforts to chase down a mere 112-run target against Punjab.

Reacting to Chahal’s impressive display, RJ Mahvash put up a picture of her with the Indian spinner on Instagram. She captioned it with a line in praise of the 34-year-old, referring to him as a ‘talented man’. Mahvash’s post ignited dating buzz surrounding the duo, who have often been spotted together at public events, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final at the Dubai International Stadium. 

It remains to be seen whether Yuzvendra Chahal or RJ Mahvash confirm the dating rumors. Chahal is already coming off a bad divorce with his former wife, Dhanashree Verma, who he paid almost INR 4.75 crores in alimony.
