Ex-Pakistani speedster and cricketing legend Shoaib Akhtar took a dig at former Indian opener Virender Sehwag for rambling about his iconic triple century against Pakistan. In a viral Instagram video, Akhtar urged Sehwag to stop ‘running the same tape’, over and over again.

The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry has existed for many years now, as players from both the nations keep quarreling, both on and off the pitch. The two teams recently played each other in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai, where the Men in Blue registered a six-wicket victory. While India and Pakistan have not played any bilateral series since 2013, the historic rivalry remains unparalleled.

It has now been fueled by a verbal exchange between former players Virender Sehwag and Shoaib Akhtar. The two players, once a part of the ‘golden era’ of international cricket, were fierce competitors on the field. They have now rekindled their rivalry through off-field banter.

The latest flare-up is around a viral Myntra fwd commercial that Virender Sehwag acted in, alongside Mandira Bedi and Sahiba Bali. The former Indian batter shared the video of the ad, alongside a caption which reminded fans of his iconic triple century against Pakistan, from 2004. Myntra fwd endorsed its new offers and brands at INR 300, while referring to Sehwag’s impressive innings.

Back in 2004, Virender Sehwag had scored a mighty 309 not out against Pakistan in Multan, during the first encounter of a three-match Test series. He scored the memorable knock at a strike rate of 82.40, smashing 39 boundaries and 6 sixes. India went on to win the match by an innings and 52 runs, to take an important 1-0 lead. The Men in Blue also won the Test series, 2-1.

Shoaib Akhtar ended the match without a wicket, as the Pakistani bowlers were hammered all around the stadium. However, Sehwag’s recent reference to the innings, has ignited a feud. Shoaib Akhtar took to social media to share a video of his frustration with the batter’s continuous rambling, and frustratingly urged him to stop doing the same in the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

Man, I am fed up of hearing him [Virender Sehwag] talk. It is the same tape he has been playing for the last 20 years – ‘300, 300, 300’. But it is the month of fasting, and one has to control their tongue, please stop.

Shoaib Akhtar to Virender Sehwag

The 49-year-old former pacer angrily acknowledged Sehwag’s triple-century as a world-class knock. However, Akhtar cheekily offered Sehwag a suggestion of getting his name into the Guinness World records, for uttering ‘300’ the most. The Pakistani legend also reminded his Indian counterpart of his own world record, and cheekily adding that he does not keep talking about it.

If you want an entry in the Guinness World Records, I can get that done, the person who says ‘300’ the most in the world. I have a record too, but unlike you, I don’t keep talking about it all the time.

Shoaib Akhtar added

Shoaib Akhtar does hold the record for the fastest ball in the history of international cricket. He bowled a delivery clocked at 161.3 km/h against England in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see whether Sehwag responds to Akhtar’s sharp criticism.

Virender Sehwag made his predictions during a Cricbuzz show, joining the elite list of cricket pundits in doing the same ahead of the 2025 IPL season. Notably, he believes two teams that have yet to win the IPL, specifically his former team Punjab Kings, will reach the playoffs. Alongside Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants were the other picks.

While many cricket analysts favor teams like CSK, RCB, or KKR to reach the top four, Virender Sehwag stands out with his alternative picks. Apart from Sehwag, Australian legend Adam Gilchrist and ex-South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock also made their predictions.
