Shohei Ohtani just cannot stop winning at the moment. On Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodgers star clinched his 3rd straight MVP title as he was crowned the 2025 National League MVP.
The Japanese international once again started the season strongly. Last year, he etched his name in history as he became the first player to hit 50 home runs and have 50 stolen bases, thus finding the 50-50 club.
This season, Ohtani resumed his two-way status and started pitching again. He did not throw a single pitch during the 2024 season after undergoing elbow surgery.
While the number of stolen bases decreased this year, Ohtani kept on slugging home runs. This year, he became the first player after Alex Rodriguez in 2002 to hit 50 or home runs in two successive seasons. He finished off the year with 55 home runs, 1 more than he managed in the 2024 season.
All of this made him a heavy favorite to repeat as the National League MVP. He went up against Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber and New York Mets’ Juan Soto for this award this year.
Schwarber finished with 56 home runs, 1 more than Ohtani. Meanwhile, Soto was the star man for the Mets in his first season. However, both these players had a disappointing end to the campaigns.
The Phillies ended up losing in the National League Division Series (NLDS) against Ohtani and the Dodgers. They lost Game 4 in 11 innings following a throwing error from pitcher Orion Kerkering.
The Mets, on the other hand, had one of the biggest downfalls. At one stage, the NL East team had the best record in the league at 45-24. However, a massive 3-month slump saw them fall out of the postseason standings and miss the playoff contention on the final day, finishing the year with an 83-79 record.
All of this made Ohtani a massive favorite to claim the MVP title again. The two-way star won his 4th unanimous MVP title as he received 30 first-place votes.
The legend continues!
