Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers began their title defense on Thursday as they took on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ahead of this game, the Japanese international gifted a $4,000 watch to all of his teammates and shared a three-peat message.
Last year, the Dodgers became the first team in MLB since 2000 to win back-to-back titles. In a topsy-turvy World Series Game 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Ohtani was staring defeat as he gave up a 3-run home run to Bo Bichette.
At one stage, the Dodgers were 4-2 down. A solo home run from Max Muncy in the 8th inning was followed by a game-tying home run from Miguel Rojas in the 9th.
In the 11th inning, they took the lead for the first time on the night with a solo home run from Will Smith. Starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto would play as a reliever and closed out the series with a double play as the Dodgers repeated as champions.

The Dodgers became the first side since the New York Yankees to repeat as champions. In his third season with the National League side, Ohtani now wants to three-peat the championship and go back-to-back-to-back.
Ahead of their season opener in front of their fans at Dodger Stadium, the reigning National League MVP would gift all of his teammates a $4,000 Seiko watch. A small note with the message “Let’s Three-peat” was also included.
Dodgers players had two gifts waiting for them at their lockers when they arrived at the ballpark today:

* a bottle of Traveller whiskey from Dave Roberts
* a $4,000 Seiko watch from Shohei Ohtani, complete with a note: “Let’s three-peat.”
Rojas, the Game 7 hero for the Dodgers, would speak highly of Ohtani after receiving the gift.
That talks a lot about what kind of human he is, not just on the field but off the field. He cares about his teammates. He cares about the community in L.A. I know that watch, we’re going to keep it forever, and we’re going to remember the best player in the world gave us a watch for Opening Day in 2026.

In the long history of MLB, there have only been 4 instances where a team has won 3 or more successive World Series titles. The Yankees, who are the most successful team in MLB with 27 titles, have done this 3 times.
They first did a 4-peat from 1936 to 1939. A decade later, they would start a 5-peat from 1949 to 1953. The third time they won 3 or more titles in consecutive seasons was from 1998 to 2000.
The only other team apart from the Yankees to have done this is the Athletics. During their time in Oakland, they won 3 straight championships from 1972 to 1974, beating the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets and, coincidentally, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Shohei Ohtani’s reaction to being hit by pitch steals show
In the very first game of the season, Shohei Ohtani suffered a blow as he got hit by a pitch. His reaction to being hit by the pitch would later steal the show.

The incident took place in the 7th inning when the Dodgers were 4-2 up. At one stage, they were 2-0 down. However, a 3-run home run from Andy Pages had turned things around for them.
Taylor Clarke, who had just entered the game and replaced Ryan Thompson, would hit Ohtani in the right arm. Instead of being angry with the pitcher, the two-way would instead smile at first baseman Carlos Santana. Check out a video regarding this below:

Ohtani would eventually finish the day going 1-for-3 with 1 hit. The Dodgers, meanwhile, clinched a comfortable 8-2 win to start the season with a victory.

After the 3-game series against the Diamondbacks, Ohtani is expected to make his first pitching start for the Dodgers this year in the second game against the Cleveland Guardians. After this series, the Dodgers will be on the road, taking on the Washington Nationals and the Toronto Blue Jays.
