Shohei Ohtani stole the spotlight once again on Sunday. As the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres met for the final time in the 2025 regular season, Ohtani was heckled by a fan. He would stun the world later on by high-fiving the heckling fan after hitting his 45th home run of the season in an 8-2 win.

The Dodgers entered the game on Sunday hoping to avoid getting swept. A week ago, they had swept the Padres in a 3-game series at Dodger Stadium to regain possession of the top spot in the National League West standings.

After earning a split in the 4-game series against the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers lost 2-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. The Padres had taken control of the standings with these back-to-back wins.

On Sunday, the bats of the Dodgers finally got hot. After the Padres took the lead through a 2-run home run from Yandy Diaz in the 3rd inning, the reigning World Series champions mounted a comeback.

After Freddie Freeman tied the game in the 6th inning with a solo home run, the Dodgers exploded in the 7th inning. Catcher Dalton Rushing smashed a 3-run home run off Jeremiah Estrada to give his team a 5-2 lead.

Freeman then stuck again. The Dodgers’ 1st baseman hit a 2-run home run off Willy Peralta. This saw the visitors put up 5 runs in the 7th inning to blow the game wide open. The highlight moment though, came after the home run from Shohei Ohtani in the 9th inning.

The reigning NL MVP was 0-for-3 up to that point with a walk. Throughout the entire game, he was heckled by a Padres fan who was sitting close to the Dodgers’ dugout. After hitting his 45th home run of the season, Ohtani would go over to the fan and shockingly high-fived him, leaving everyone stunned.

Manager Dave Roberts and several of Ohtani’s teammates would laugh at the incident from the dugout. Teoscar Hernandez would then throw some sunflower seeds at the Japanese international as he extended his team’s lead to 8-2.

Dave Roberts claims Shohei Ohtani showed his personality by high-fiving the heckling fan

In the final game of the series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, a fan tried to get under the skin of Shohei Ohtani by constantly heckling him. After the two-way star high-fived that fan, manager Dave Roberts claimed that his player showed his personality by that gesture.

Roberts had a huge smile on his face after Ohtani went over to greet the fan. As he entered the dugout, the Dodgers manager would give him a high-five and cheer him on for his actions.

While speaking with the reporters after the game regarding that incident, Roberts also admitted that it was a bit out of character for Ohtani to high-five his heckler.

It was very out of character from Shohei, (but the heckler) was wearing him out the whole game. So it was good to see Shohei initiate a high-five from him. That was great. That was fun. It was good to see Shohei show his personality.

Dave Roberts said

Roberts mentioned that the fan was reminding Ohtani about how “bad” he was in this series. Ohtani was 0-for-10 up until that at-bat. That home run was the only hit he had in the span of three games, which brought down his batting average to .280 for the season.

Shohei Ohtani and Dodgers tied for division lead with Padres after 8-2 win

The Dodgers were one game behind the Padres before the matchup on Sunday. Following their triumph, they are tied for the lead with an identical record of 74-57.

The good thing for Ohtani and his team is that they have the tiebreaker on their side. The Dodgers have a 9-4 record against the Padres this year. So, if the two teams finish with the same record, the Dodgers will be crowned the winners of the divisions ahead of the Padres.

The Dodgers will now take on the Cincinnati Reds at their home in Southern California. Meanwhile, the Padres will turn their focus towards the Seattle Mariners.
