Scary and unfortunate scenes unfolded just outside of Ford Field on Sunday when the Detroit Lions played and lost in last season’s NFC playoff game rematch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Multiple shots were fired, leaving one Detroit fan dead.
On Sunday evening, the Lions fans were tailgating near the Eastern Market as their side led by 3 points in the fourth quarter. Eyewitnesses present at the scene heard multiple gunshots and saw one man wearing Lions’ gear lying on the ground.
Another person was flinching right beside the presumed body of the victim when the cops arrived around 4:30 pm. Detroit Police Chief James White revealed they caught one man, in his 30s, with a gun from the Oakland County suburb of Oak Park.

[Unfortunately] tailgating, drinking, and guns. They don’t mix. You’ve got unfortunately, two people shot, one dead. And you have a suspect that’s in custody; that’s, you know, going to be dealing with some very serious charges—likely murder.James White from the scene told the reporters, as per NBC Sports
The officers suspect infighting between the three involved, which led to the use of the firearm. A Detroit native in his 40s was shot and died on the spot, and the other in his 20s was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
Detroit Police Chief expressed his disappointment with society becoming a trigger-happy
It was any other normal game day, according to the shopkeepers who sold food for the fans visiting the stadium, until chaos insinuated out of the blue. White, who reached the scene of the crime after the first responders in the area, expressed his disappointment in people becoming violent over everything, resulting in the use of guns.
We bring them out for every minor conflict. It’s ridiculous. If you’re going to fight, have a fight. Live to fight another day.James White said
There have been several in-fights among fans in various stadiums throughout the country. Gun violence is a stain on society, but a person being shot isn’t an everyday occurrence during football games. Previously, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker called for the restriction of firearms in households.
As for the Lions, they failed to replicate their last season’s result as Baker Mayfield scored an 11-yard touchdown with just 30 seconds left on the clock to win 20-16. The Buccaneers are 2 for 2 at the start of the season, while the Lions are 1-1, and up next they will face the Arizona Cardinals in week 3.
