Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon gave a bold response to a reporter’s question regarding his approach to coaching his team. The Cardinals stand at 2-4 after six weeks of football, but it’s clear to anyone who watched the games that Gannon’s teams had solid chances to win at least three of them before their opponents snatched victory away.

They lost three games—San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, and the Tennessee Titans—through last-second field goals. Despite taking the lead in these games, Gannon’s team failed to deliver the killer blow. As a result, the Cardinals sit at the bottom of the NFC West.

On Wednesday, Gannon sat down in front of the media to answer questions about the state of the roster and injuries. One reporter took this opportunity to ask him the time frame when he stopped coaching with emotion when in a pinch. A reporter asked:

Coach [Gannon], how early in your career did you have to start trying to figure out how to take emotion out of coaching, as far as when you have these issues and when you have all these injuries that you have on these pieces? When was the first time that you can recall that?

Gannon gave a reply that left the entire room stunned.

2007, when our quarterback went to jail.

The Atlanta Falcons appointed Gannon as the defensive coordinator and quality control coach in 2007. In the same year, quarterback Michael Vick went to jail after pleading guilty to one count of criminal conspiracy to operate a dogfight ring across state lines.

After leaving Atlanta, Gannon joined the St Louis Rams (Los Angeles Rams) as a college scout. The 42-year-old worked his way up the ladder and finally bagged his first head coaching job in 2023 with the Cardinals.

Jonathan Gannon is not the only Cardinal to associate himself with Michael Vick

Ganon did not name Vick directly, but it’s easy to decipher his intentions. However, he isn’t the only Cardinal to push Vick into the spotlight. In fact, his quarterback tried his hand first.

Last month, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray uploaded a couple of photos wearing Vick’s old Virginia Tech jersey, sitting next to his pet bulldog. Needless to say, it kicked off a wildfire of nasty tweets criticizing the Pro Bowler for his action. Murray quickly removed the photos after realizing his mistake.

In no way, shape, or form do I condone animal cruelty or dog fighting, whatever it is. For me personally, you all saw me wear the Michael Vick jersey. A player that I admire very much growing up, and then just being at home with my pup… I saw how it affected people and decided to take it down.

Murray is in rehab after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his foot. Gannon gave the starting quarterback job to veteran Jacoby Brissett for the week six clash against the Indianapolis Colts.

Brissett went 27/44 for 320 yards (61.3%), threw 2 touchdowns, and had 1 interception. Tight end Trey McBride caught 8 passes for 72 yards and scored one touchdown, while wide receiver Greg Dortch scored the other one.

The Cardinals host the 3-1-1 Packers next at State Farm Stadium on Monday. The Packers lead the series 47-26-4 (including 3 postseason meetings). As per the BetMGM sportsbook, the Green Bay Packers are 6.5-point favorites to secure a win.
