Enduring their second consecutive loss, the Pittsburgh Steelers have dropped to a 3-2 standing following the match against the Dallas Cowboys. While many factors contributed to the 20-17 defeat, absence of star wide receiver George Pickens was evident.
Pickens, who wore a black eye in the game, largely struggled in front of the Cowboys’ secondary and finished the Sunday Night Football game by recording merely three catches for 26 receiving yards. If that wasn’t enough, he was labeled as “weak” by Dallas’ cornerback Jourdan Lewis while walking to the locker room.
While Steelers wide receiver George Pickens was already visibly frustrated, things escalated when he encountered Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis on the sidelines. According to clips captured by NBC broadcast cameras, Lewis was seen taking verbal jabs at Pickens while gloating over the victory. In response, Pickens grabbed his helmet with one hand, throwing Lewis off balance, causing him to fall hard to the ground.
Although Pickens’ frustration was reasonable, he reflected serious unsportsmanlike behavior by pulling his opponent’s helmet. Some fans are depending on the NFL to suspend the former Alabama product.
The wideout entered the 2024 season with an aspiration to have a breakthrough year, but in the last five games, he has only managed 310 yards and zero touchdowns.
Mike Tomlin addresses limited use of star receiver George Pickens
Despite the consecutive losses in the past two weeks, the Steelers are standing in a strong position in the league. In Week 5’s game, the team had quite a limited use of the star wideout, which raised questions for head coach Mike Tomlin in the post-game press conference. However, dismissing any arising speculations, he said it was mainly for “rep management,” with no deeper reason behind it.
The Steelers are also in the market looking for a wide receiver to pair with Pickens and give quarterback Justin Fields reliable targets on the field. Rumors have it, that the team has even approached the Las Vegas Raiders to get veteran star Davante Adams but there haven’t been many updates.
