Timo Werner is currently on a 9 match goalless drought. This is the longest-running stand for him without a goal since his times at RB Leipzig after he made the switch from Stuttgart.

Chelsea fans are a bit concerned about the German international’s form at the moment and some are questioning should he be used on the left or in a more central role?

Since his arrival to Chelsea, Timo Werner has had a somewhat mixed start to life at London. While some may argue he hasn’t been bad at all, the extraordinary high standards set at the moment for new arrivals is difficult to cope.

With 8 goals and 5 assists in 21 appearances, he’s nowhere close to being a flop that’s for sure. But it’s clear that he could’ve scored a lot more given the chances he had especially in the games against Leeds United and West Ham United.

Additionally with the amount of quality he has, he needs to do better on such occasions. The $72 million tag at the back doesn’t help his cause as well that’s for sure.

However many Chelsea fans are questioning that why is he continuously being used on the left? Why not give him a more central role?

To answer that the main issue is that at the moment Frank Lampard doesn’t have enough winger options in his artillery. He has Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson Odoi- both right wingers out with injury.

Christian Pulisic is back and while he’s more predominantly a left winger- he’s being have to used in the right wing. This leaves just the Striker position and left wing.

So if Lampard wants to use Wenger in a central role, he will have to accommodate Kai Havertz ok the right wing or go with the two striker formation. This is something he did in the second half against West Ham United.

Frank Lampard

Timo has had a period where it hasn’t gone for him and strikers get judged on goals. He’s getting into positions very regularly and I feel that once he gets a goal or two, we’ll see many more from him. We’re working hard in training as we always do.

We always do extra finishing in training and I feel it’s very important to do specific work for strikers. I never felt you could score freely at the weekend if you didn’t work on it throughout the week, so that’s a big part of what we do.
