In Short
  • Shreyas Iyer's captaincy has led Punjab Kings to an unbeaten record against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
  • He holds the highest win percentage as captain in IPL history among those with over 50 matches.
  • Fans are advocating for Iyer to be considered for India's white-ball captaincy due to his successful leadership track record.

Following a masterful performance that secured a victory for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026, captain Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a future contender for Team India captaincy. Fans have backed the 31-year-old due to his notable success in the role.

Ever since Shreyas Iyer took over as PBKS’ captain, the franchise has not lost a single match against five-time IPL winners CSK. Punjab Kings continued their winning spree at the MA Chidambaram Stadium last evening, defeating the Men in Yellow by five wickets. Iyer and Co. chased down a massive 210-run target, with Priyansh Arya being named Player of the Match for his brisk 39 runs off just 11 deliveries.

Iyer was the top-scorer for his side with a 50 off 29 balls, but it was his captaincy that stood out. He had perfectly anticipated the pitch to remain favorable for chasing at the toss. The PBKS captain was equally effective in his bowling rotations, as he introduced Yuzvendra Chahal at the right time to dry up runs in the middle-overs of CSK’s innings, while also showing faith in Vijaykumar Vyshak, who returned with figures of 2/38.

The 31-year-old’s appointment as captain of the Punjab-based franchise has fundamentally transformed them from a rudderless side to title contenders. In his first season as captain in 2025, he guided PBKS to the final after a decade-long drought since 2014, only to lose out narrowly in the end against RCB. He is also the only captain to have led three different franchises to the IPL finals: PBKS, KKR, and DC.

Shreyas Iyer recently became the IPL captain with the highest win-rate (59.80%), among those who have led in over 50 matches. It has reignited the debate about his suitability for India’s white-ball captaincy, particularly in ODIs, a position currently held by Shubman Gill. The latter’s early tenure as ODI captain has been underwhelming, strengthening arguments that Iyer’s proven experience, maturity, and ability to revitalize teams make him a perfect contender for the role.

2024 was highly successful for the right-hander, as he not only clinched the IPL title for KKR, but also steered Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. With India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, in his mid-30s, Iyer might be considered a candidate.

Why no India captaincy for Shreyas Iyer? Fans challenge selectors over his stellar IPL record

When Shreyas Iyer walked out to bat for PBKS during the chase against CSK, the team needed an anchor. Analyzing the situation, he scored a gritty half-century, his first of the ongoing 2026 IPL season, while helping his team over the line in their second league-stage clash.

Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024, and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025, after an eleven-year absence from the playoffs. No other captain has been able to do so with three different franchises. Fans have therefore demanded that the 31-year-old be considered for Team India captaincy, with a new dawn set to arrive in the coming years.

Many of them shared their reactions on social media, with one fan even claiming that India’s best white-ball captain at the moment remains out of the BCCI’s plans. Some of them urged head coach Gautam Gambhir to opt for Iyer instead of Shubman Gill, while pointing towards the former’s numbers with the bat while captaining. Iyer top-scored for PBKS in IPL 2025, with 604 runs to his name in a mere 17 innings.

On social media, fans were also quick to point towards Iyer’s role as a master tactician, with his strategy aligning perfectly with India’s traditional strengths. Furthermore, his captaincy is believed to have infused confidence into franchises such as DC and PBKS.
