Ace Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the Sydney hospital, where he was admitted after having suffered a serious injury during the Men in Blue’s final ODI against Australia. The BCCI shared an update on the player’s well-being, while appreciating the medical team’s efforts.

Shreyas Iyer injured himself while fielding in the final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, after landing awkwardly on his chest while attempting to complete a diving catch at backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. He looked to be in excruciating pain after taking a heavy fall, and was attended by the medical staff. They decided to carry Iyer out of the ground as it looked certain that he would not be able to continue.

Iyer was hurried off to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for evaluation, with reports later confirming that the player had worryingly suffered a laceration to his spleen. Iyer was shifted to the ICU for a while after his blood pressure dropped low, before being kept under observation in a private medical room. The BCCI most recently, confirmed that he even underwent a minor surgical procedure to repair the spleen.

Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was among the first people to open up about Iyer’s condition, as the 35-year-old stated that his condition was ‘stable’ and that he was keeping in touch with the others through texts.

The BCCI shared another major update on Iyer’s condition, stating that the 30-year-old has now been discharged from the hospital. Iyer is expected to remain in Australia for follow-up consultations, before receiving the green light to fly back to India.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shared the nuances of Iyer’s horrific on-field injury, exclaiming that the spleen laceration had led to internal bleeding, which was identified by the doctors. The BCCI also expressed its gratitude towards the medical professionals involved in the cricketer’s care, including Dr. Koroush Haghighi and his team, as well as the senior specialist from India, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala

Shreyas Iyer’s injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same.

It remains to be seen how long Iyer takes to return to playing cricket, given a spleen injury usually takes quite a while to recover from. Thereafter, the top-order batter is expected to remain out of action for India’s upcoming all-format series against South Africa, at home.

Shreyas Iyer opens up on near-fatal injury

Iyer was discharged from the hospital earlier today, and is expected to stay in Sydney for the next few days or maybe even weeks. The Punjab Kings star will be hoping to complete a quick recovery. While in the hospital, he kept in touch with his teammates and well-wishers through text messages, while his family was flown all the way to Australia by the BCCI to stay with the player during his tough times.

A day prior to being released from the hospital, the 30-year-old took to social media to share a message, providing fans with a sigh of relief. Iyer exclaimed that he is going through a recovery process, and that his health is getting better by each day. He also took the time to express his heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming kind wishes and support he received from fans and others throughout the period.

The veteran India star still remains under observation, with his health having improved significantly. Iyer is on the road to recovery, and the BCCI Medical Team, in consultations with specialists in Australia and India, are monitoring the player’s progress and his return to full strength.
