Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer lost his cool at a security personnel, who tried to click pictures with him, while in attendance at a recent event. It marked Iyer’s first major public appearance, since having suffered a life-threatening spleen injury during India’s white-ball tour to Australia.
Shreyas Iyer has not played for the Men in Blue since the end of the third ODI against Australia last month, in Sydney. What was initially perceived to be a bruise to the ribs turned out to be a spleen rupture, after the 30-year-old injured himself while attempting to complete a catch at backward point. He had to be rushed to a nearby hospital, where he spent the following days under treatment and observation.
Iyer even underwent a minor procedure to control the bleeding in his spleen. He has returned back home after being given the green light by doctors and the medical team over getting onto a flight. The 30-year-old’s recovery has panned out well so far, and was most recently, spotted at an event with Punjab Kings teammate Shashank Singh. Iyer’s altercation with a security personnel who was assigned with the duty of escorting him, is what caught fans’ attention.
Iyer was surrounded by a host of fans, all of whom wished to take a picture with the Indian team icon. He seemed uninterested, ignoring the requests. However, a security personnel caught the Mumbai batter completely off guard, as he tried to put his arm around the cricketer to pose for a picture. Iyer immediately stopped him, and angrily suggested that his job is to help him walk out freely.
The video of the incident went viral on social media, with fans suggesting that Iyer has been grumpy since he suffered the injury during India’s ODI against Australia. Despite the injury, the star Indian batter is among the 21 players retained by Punjab Kings ahead of the 2026 IPL auction. In his first season with the franchise, Iyer guided them to their second-ever IPL final, where they lost out to RCB.
Iyer will be hoping to be fit in time to play for PBKS in the 2026 IPL season, with a faint hope of also making it to the Indian T20I squad at the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, at the recent event attended by Iyer, the player posed for pictures with Punjab Kings owner and actress, Preity Zinta.
Shreyas Iyer to be out of action for next 2-3 months, to miss South Africa and New Zealand ODIs
Indian batting star Shreyas Iyer will remain out of action for an extended period, given the seriousness of the abdominal injury that he suffered in India’s ODI against Australia, last month. Iyer has been advised to take rest for a speedy recovery, and is set to remain out for two to three months.

The Mumbai-born batter had to spend his time in the ICU after rupturing his spleen, before being shifted out after his condition stabilized. However, on his return to India, the 30-year-old had to undergo an ultra-sonography scan at a hospital close to his residence. The results were reviewed by renowned medicine specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, who was also in touch with the doctors at the Sydney hospital.
Several reports suggest that the injury that Shreyas Iyer suffered is healing fast. The Indian ODI vice-captain has been cleared to resume normal day-to-day activities and start with basic isometric exercises, as per the current assessment. However, he has been advised against doing any form of heavy training, heavy lifting or other such activities, as it could elevate the pressure on his abdomen, for the next month.
It has also been reported that Shreyas Iyer’s rehabilitation program at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru might start only after another UGC scan, after two months. As a result, he is clearly expected to be out of India’s upcoming ODIs against South Africa and New Zealand.
