Shreyas Iyer to play for Lancashire at the Royal London Cup

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been signed by Lancashire for the Royal London One-Day Cup which will take place later this year. The tournament forms an integral part of the domestic cricket season in England and is of List A status in cricket. It will have 18 first-class teams competing against each other. It is expected that the tournament will start by July of this year subject to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The tournament had to be scrapped in 2020 due to the pandemic and hence, Somerset who won the title in 2019 are the defending champions. The final of the tournament has tentatively been chosen on 19 August 2021 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Lancashire will be one of the sides that will fancy their chances of going all the way and winning the title.

Lancashire Cricket took to Twitter today to announce the signing of Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer writing, “We’re excited to announce the signing of Indian international batsman Shreyas Iyer for this summer’s Royal London Cup.” Soon after they posted it, the tweet has gone viral with Indian fans welcoming the move of signing Iyer.

The focus for Iyer would currently be on the ODI series against England which begins tomorrow following which, his focus will shift to the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he captains the Delhi Capitals (DC) side. He took them to 2nd place in last year’s season and this year, he would hope to go one better and seal a first IPL title for the side for whom the trophy has been eluding ever since the beginning.
