Gujarat Titans skipper and Indian national team star Shubman Gill etched his name on record books, with a match-winning 76-run innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad, in an IPL encounter. The young opener interestingly holds the record for the most IPL 50+ scores, at the age of 25.

A versatile right-handed batter, Shubman Gill burst onto the scene after an impressive spell as the vice-captain of the Indian under-19 side that won the 2018 ICC u-19 World Cup. The young right-hander was immediately picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders at the 2018 IPL auction. The 2021 season was a special one for Gill, as he helped KKR make it to the IPL final, while having scored 478 runs in 17 matches.

Shubman Gill moved to Gujarat Titans in 2022, and played a pivotal role in GT’s first IPL triumph. It was followed by another record-breaking season for the young opener, as he won the 2023 IPL Orange Cap. Gill scored 890 runs in 2023 at an average of 59.33, hitting four centuries. His leadership skills were put to test, after he was appointed as GT’s new skipper last season, following Hardik Pandya’s departure.

He sems to have discovered glory with his team this season, as GT move closer to securing a 2025 IPL play-offs spot. In ten matches this season, Shubman Gill has scored 465 runs. He has scored runs at an average of 51.67 and a blistering strike rate of 162.02, hitting five half-centuries. Gill has hit an impressive 48 boundaries and 15 sixes, while helping his side claim seven wins out of ten matches.

The ex-KKR opener is fourth on the list of players with the most runs this season, and remains behind two of his GT teammates, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, and MI’s Suryakumar Yadav. Against SRH, Gill scored a match-winning knock of 76 runs off 38 balls, marking his third consecutive 50+ score. Prior to his innings against SRH, the 25-year-old registered scores of 84 and 90, against RR and KKR, respectively.

For Gill, it marked his 29th instance of scoring 50+ runs in the IPL, the most by any batsman before the age of 25. This record puts him ahead of Rohit Sharma, who had 19 50+ scores before turning 25. Furthermore, Gill has also surpassed the records of Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Yashaswi Jaiswal, all of whom had only 16 50+ scores to their name, before the age of 25.

Additionally, the 25-year-old leveled Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson’s tally of the most 50+ scores in the IPL, over its 18-year long history. Gill is now joint 13th on the list, which is headed by RCB icon Virat Kohli, who has 69 50+ scores in the competition.

GT captain Shubman Gill risks suspension over heated confrontation with umpires, during IPL encounter against SRH

While Gujarat Titans claimed an impressive 38-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 51st match of the 2025 IPL season, the spotlight was on GT skipper Shubman Gill and his antics. The 25-year-old engaged in a heated argument with the umpires, not once, but twice, during the match.

The first incident occurred after Gill was controversially run out. The batter questioned the third umpire’s call, after doubts emerged over the keeper triggering the stumps with his gloves. Later on, Gill once again lashed out at the on–field umpires, over a DRS review. His actions seem to have violated Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, and there is an increasing risk that he could handed a one-match ban.

The decision however, depends on the match referee’s assessment of the game. Should he be penalized by the IPL, Shubman Gill would be fined up to 50 percent of his match fee for a Level 1 offence, and up to 100 percent of his match fee for a Level 2 offence.
