The Indian women’s team is set to aim for their first ever ICC silverware as the prestigious World Cup is hosted by India after a gap of 9 years. India who still doesn’t have an ICC title looks as strong as they have ever been under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.
With experienced campaigners like Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma and the captain herself, India are in a good position to rewrite history. A few days prior to the first match of team India, team captain Harmanpreet Kaur received a very beautiful message from Indian men’s Test captain Shubman Gill.
Gill gave a lookback into history for Kaur as well where he mentioned the days when she used to play matches with the boys. Gill who had a very good Test series against England as captain also gave her a good tip to enjoy the tournament as a leader.
I think her leadership style is very balanced. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, she used to come to the academy where I used to practice outside the PC and she used to play matches with us. Just smashing our bowlers all over the park and as a kid that was a very rare kind of sight. I think there is only one thing that I would tell her to be able to enjoy every moment. Sometimes when you are in the moment, you are not able to enjoy it. Only when the moment has passed, you kind of look upon it and you have a good memory of it. But it is important to be in that moment and be present and enjoy that moment as much as possible.

Kaur reacted to the video and was grateful for Gill’s words. She had the following to say:
First of all thank you so much for this sweet message from Shubman Gill. I didn’t know he was there when I was batting with the young boys outside PCA Stadium but I think as Shubman mentioned that no matter what enjoyment is something that always brings your best, so I will try to enjoy myself and lead my team from the front.

Kaur will script history if she manages to take the team over the line in this World Cup. The pressure will be immense with the expectations set from the home crowd.
However, India must look at the positives of playing at home as well, as they would know the pitch and weather conditions better than any other team taking part in the competition. India are set to begin their campaign against co-hosts Sri Lanka on the 30th of September.
Shubman Gill showers words of praise for star batter Smriti Mandhana
Prior to the start of India’s world cup campaign, the Indian men’s Test team captain showed his support to the women’s team. After praising captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian batter also praised women’s team icon Smriti Mandhana for her batting.
Gill drew references to former Australian batter Damien Martyn citing the lazy elegance the batter used to show in his heydays. He praised Mandhana’s technique and affirmed how important it is in pressure situations.
I think it is kind of Damien Martyn, how she plays. She has that slow, lazy elegance. Technique is something that gets you through tough phases. When you are under pressure or situation is tough, it helps you.

Mandhana recently scored back-to-back record breaking hundreds against Australia. In the second ODI she scored a hundred of just 70 balls making it the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian woman cricketer. In the very next match, she bettered her record by 20 balls scoring the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian cricketer, be it man or woman, in just 50 balls.

Mandhana will look to further push this form into the world Cup and lead from the front. She has been a favorite for the highest run getter in the World Cup for many experts and if she lives up to it, India will have some special days on the field.
