Indian Test captain Shubman Gill continued his dream run, scoring his fourth hundred in the ongoing India-England series, at Old Trafford in Manchester. The 25-year-old batter’s knock in the fourth Test also created history, equaling a record previously set by Indian cricket legends.

Shubman Gill led the Indian batting unit from the front with a talismanic display in the penultimate Test of the five-match series, where the visitors currently trail 1-2. He stabilized the second innings after an early collapse, which saw both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan dismissed in the first over, leaving the team in a precarious position at 0/2. Gill and KL Rahul then forged a crucial 188-run stand off 417 balls.

The Indian captain responded to the questions surrounding his leadership abilities, after the Lord’s defeat, as well as concerns about his run-scoring on pitches offering less assistance to batters. He delivered a statement hundred on the final day, with his 103-run knock off 238 balls, keeping India alive after a poor bowling display in the first innings, which allowed England to take a massive 311-run lead.

While KL Rahul missed his hundred by just ten runs at Old Trafford, Shubman Gill lived up to expectations by bringing up his ninth career Test hundred in the 83rd over. Celebrating his fourth century of the series, Gill roared in joy, amidst cheers from the crowd. He has now scored 722 runs in eight innings against the Three Lions this summer, scoring at an average of 90.25, marking his best red-ball outing since his debut.

With four tons in the India-England series, Gill also matched a record set by his predecessors for the most centuries by an Indian batter in a Test series. He joined Indian cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli on this elite list, becoming only the fourth batter to achieve this feat. Kohli was the last to do so, hitting four tons in the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Gavaskar did it twice, in 1971 and 1978-79.

Furthermore, adding to his impressive run of breaking Test cricket records, Gill also became only the third captain to score four centuries in a Test series, after Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar. He also joined teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gavaskar on another list, becoming the third Indian batter to score 700-plus runs in a Test series, and notably, the first Indian captain to do so in an away Test series.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s hundred at Old Trafford also marks another historic milestone, being the first Indian batter to score a ton at this venue since Sachin Tendulkar in 1990. Gill also became the first red-ball captain in over 47 years to hit four centuries in an away Test series.

Shubman Gill Surpasses Virat Kohli’s SENA Record with Old Trafford Masterclass

Shubman Gill shattered a record once held by Virat Kohli, after scoring a hundred in the second innings at Old Trafford, against England. He broke Kohli’s record for most runs scored by an Asian batter in a Test series, played in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).

After scoring 74 runs on the fourth day, Gill surpassed Kohli’s record of 692 runs, which was set during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. On the all-time list of Asian batters with the most runs in a series in SENA countries, Gill now tops the list. He also surpassed ex-Pakistani batter Mohammad Yousuf, who held the record of 631 runs in a Test series in England, a feat he achieved in 2006.

Gill also became the first batter to hit four tons in his debut series as captain, a remarkable feat even Virat Kohli could not achieve. Kohli, Don Bradman, Greg Chappell, Steve Smith and Warwick Armstrong, all scored three hundreds in their debut series as skipper.
