Indian T20I star Abhishek Sharma recalled a hilarious incident involving teammate Shubman Gill, about how the Indian captain escaped punishment with an innocent face despite being mischievous. The story Sharma referred to, was from his and Gill’s formative playing days in age-group cricket.
Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill most recently featured together for India, at the 2025 Asia Cup. The Men in Blue, after an undefeated group stage and the ‘Super Four’ journey, defeated Pakistan in the final to win the Asia Cup title. Sharma was instrumental throughout the tournament, finishing as the highest run-getter with 314 runs in just seven innings, earning the Player of the Tournament award.
The 25-year-old all-rounder also forged a new opening pair Shubman Gill, with their best performance being a 105-run stand against Pakistan in the ‘Super Fours’. Sharma and Gill share a camaraderie that extends way beyond the Indian team setup, with the duo having played together since their u-16 days for Punjab. Sharma and Gill were a pivotal part of India’s 2018 U-19 World Cup-winning squad, and even trained under Indian legend Yuvraj Singh, together.
After the Asia Cup victory, Sharma sat down with Gaurav Kapur, making a revelation about his close friend. The all-rounder admitted that Gill was one of the most mischievous players during their age-group cricketing days, but possessed a surprising ability to go unnoticed. Sharma narrated a hilarious incident from their U-16 days in Dharamsala, where the team had to take a bus to the stadium from the hotel, which was 500 meters away.
As a kid there is only one kid who has never been caught doing mischief. That is Shubman [Gill]… He had a talent that he could change his expressions.
Abhishek Sharma continued, stating that Gill led an argument to persuade the bus driver to play Punjabi music, despite the driver’s objection. He added that the coaches took note of the incident, after which the driver was asked to identify the culprits, with five players, including Sharma, Gill, and Prabhsimran Singh, lined up for identification. However, Gill wittily escaped punishment by putting on an ‘innocent’ face, while Sharma stated that the others had to sign a letter that would be sent back home.

First, I was sad about being sent back, but more sad about Shubman [Gill] not getting caught. The person who started this, the person because of whom we were standing there.
The 2025 Asia Cup hero narrated that Gill had a talent of changing expressions, and that the drivers did not point out to him. The incident showcases the wonderful bond that Sharma shares with Gill, with both of them having risen through the ranks together.
Abhishek Sharma Discloses Ex-India Opener’s Role in His India and IPL Success
Not just Yuvraj Singh, but another former Indian player helped Abhishek Sharma turn his form around in the IPL as well as for the Indian T20I side. Sharma recently revealed that legendary opener Shikhar Dhawan advised him to manifest his goals before achieving them.

Abhishek Sharma became the first player to go past the 930 rating points-mark on the ICC T20I Batting Rankings, following a remarkable Asia Cup innings against Sri Lanka. The young left-hander has been in great form over the past year, having scored 844 runs in 23 T20Is at an average of 38.36, including two hundreds and five fifties, and showed off his best during the recently-concluded Asia Cup.
Sharma also had a stellar 2025 IPL campaign, despite a slow start initially. He attributed the turnaround to advice that he received from ex-SRH star Shikhar Dhawan. The 25-year-old revealed that he was invited to Dhawan’s place, where he told him to start writing a diary and manifest his goals. Dhawan had urged Sharma to visualize that he had already won matches and that he was the best player in the Indian team.
Shikhar Dhawan had told me that manifestation is important, just manifest that you have already done it… He made me start writing in a diary.
