On 21st May 2023, Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosted Gujarat Titans at home for the final group stage match of the season. Winning the match means, RCB would be tied on points with Mumbai Indians at the 4th place and qualify for the knockouts thanks to their positive net run rate.

The match started well for the hosts, with Kohli’s century taking RCB to a massive total of 197. Despite the massive total, GT chased it down as Gill smashed a century and Vijay Shankar scored a quick fifty to win the match. They were also involved in a massive partnership of 123. That partnership knocked out RCB, ensuring MI qualified for the playoffs.

Recently, JioCinema asked Shankar and Gill to rewatch the innings and give their thoughts on the partnership. Gill joked that the innings must’ve been the most hated one in the IPL and revealed what Mohammed Siraj told him.

I think this is the most hated partnership in the IPL. Even in the Indian team, Siraj told me that they don't talk about my innings as much as they do about Vijay. He was playing anything.
Shubman Gill said

Gill had an incredible 2023 IPL, winning the Orange Cap. He hit 890 runs in 17 innings with an incredible average of 59.33. His season saw him hit three centuries, with a highest score of 129.

Shubman Gill loses cool after third umpire changes his decision, starts argument with umpire

On 11th April, Gujarat Titans traveled to Jaipur to play Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. They started the match well, as they dismissed the two RR openers within the powerplay, but they faced their two most consistent batters later on.

Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson scored fifties, building a partnership of 130 runs. The two looked in great touch, attacking the GT bowlers with ease and scoring runs as much as possible. Shubman Gill, already tensed, finally cracked after a decision by the third umpire.

On the 4th ball of the 17th over, Mohit Sharma bowled a ball that was called wide. Gill decided to review the decision and the third umpire saw the batter, Samson, shift to the offside. Seeing the movement, he decided to call for a legal delivery.

After seeing the replay once more, he decided to stick with the umpire’s call and called it a wide. This enraged Gill, who began an argument with the umpire. He walked up to the umpire and began shouting at his face while he tried to explain the decision.
