Sidney Crosby has found his name trending in trade rumors once again. On Tuesday, the 10-time NHL All-Star shot down speculations regarding a trade away from the Pittsburgh Penguins following another poor season.

The Penguins had a disappointing time during the 2024-25 season. The 5-time Stanley Cup champions finished 7th in the Metropolitan Division with a 34-36-12 record and collected 80 points. Their poor performances led to the team management parting ways with head coach Mike Sullivan.

At the age of 37, Crosby was the top scorer for his team with 91 points (33 goals and 58 assists) from 80 games. Now 38, the Penguins captain will begin his 2-year contract extension that he signed last September.

In the midst of the team’s slump, General Manager Kyle Dubas issued a warning that every player on the team was open to trade except Crosby. Despite this words, there have been several rumors linking the Canadian international away from Pittsburgh.

While speaking at the NHL/NHLPA North American Player Media Tour on Tuesday, Crosby expressed that he has never seriously considered anything except playing for the Penguins.

I’m worried about playing for Pittsburgh. I haven’t seriously considered anything else… If it ever came to that point, I would discuss it, but I don’t feel like I’m there.

Crosby has played his entire career with the Penguins. Since his draft as the No.1 draft pick in 2005, the forward has been part of the Pittsburgh-based organization and has led them to 3 Stanley Cup triumphs (2009, 2016 and 2017) as captain.

With him in the twilight of his career, the big question is whether he will leave and go somewhere else to win another Cup. The Penguins have missed the playoffs 3 years in a row now and have not won a playoff series since their first-round victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018.

Sidney Crosby comments on links to Montreal Canadiens

One team that has been linked with a trade move regarding Sidney Crosby is the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadian outfit has been the team the forward grew up watching as a fan. In an interview with TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, Crosby openly commented on this matter.

The Habs are one of the six “Original” teams of the NHL. After missing the playoffs in 3 successive seasons while finishing bottom of their division rankings, they reached the playoffs last year with a 5th place finish. However, they suffered a first-round elimination at the hands of the Washington Capitals.

I get it why that would come up and that sort of thing (speculation). It doesn’t make it any easier when you’re losing to hear those things. But at the same time, to know that a team like that wants you, it’s not the end of the world. It could be worse (he smiled). Yeah, I think that’s just part of it.

Sidney Crosby said in the interview with Pierre LeBrun

His agent, Pat Brisson, would go on to make some interesting comments regarding these rumors. While speaking with LeBrun, he expressed that there is always a possibility of him leaving the Pittsburgh and going to a cup contending team.

Let’s put it this way, it’s always a possibility, you know. It’s been three years they haven’t made the playoffs. It all depends on how Sid is going to be and how the team is going to do.

Crosby will enter his 21st season with the Penguins in 2025-26. Alongside his teammates, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin, he will create history.

It will be the 20th season that the trio will enter together in the NHL as teammates. It could also be the last one as Malkin, 39, only has one year remaining on his contract. Meanwhile, Letang, 38, has three years remaining.

For now, Crosby’s sole attention is on the team and the upcoming season. With the Winter Olympics in 2026 in Milan next year, the veteran forward wants to have another top year and bring home another gold medal with Canada.
