Sifan Hassan is an Ethiopian-born Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She won two gold medals at the 2019 World Championships, in the 1500 meters and 10,000 meters events, becoming the only athlete (male or female) in history to win both events at a single World Championships or Olympic Games. Hassan is the world record holder for both the 5 km road race and the mile, both set in 2019, as well as the one hour run, set in 2020. She held the world record for the women’s 10,000 meters for two days in June 2021.

Born on 1 January 1993 in Adama, Ethiopia, Sifan left the country as a refugee and arrived in the Netherlands in 2008 at age fifteen. She began running while undertaking studies to become a nurse. Hassan is 1.70m (5 ft 7 in) tall and weighs around 49kg (108lb).
