Team India squared off against Australia on the first day of the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. India’s stand-in captain, Jasprit Bumrah, won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that had plenty of help for the pacers.
KL Rahul opened the innings for India, and despite the fall of wickets at the other end, he displayed extraordinary technique to negate the threat from the trio of Aussie fast bowlers in the form of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins. However, he was dismissed in a controversial way on 26 runs off 74 deliveries.
Starc bowled a fuller delivery on the off stump of Rahul, and he tried to defend it with his usual style with the bat snicked in close to the pad. As Alex Carey collected the ball, every Aussie fielder went up to appeal as everyone heard a nick. The on-field umpire, Richard Kettleborough, gave it not out.
The third umpire had to check the replays after Australia challenged the decision. The TV umpire ruled it out after not checking all the angles and there was inconclusive evidence to overturn the on field umpire’s decision. Former umpire, Simon Taufel, explained the reason behind the decision.
Simon Taufel: "We saw with that side on shot there was a spike on RTS with the bat away from the pad, in other words the bottom of the bat hadn't reached the pad.

Rahul was definitely not happy with the decision and was shaking his head while moving back to the pavilion. In fact, the commentators were also in agreement that there was no conclusive evidence to rule Rahul out in that case.
Jasprit Bumrah led India back into the match in the first Test in Perth
It was a field day for the pace bowling attack from both sides. India were bowled out for just 150 runs due to brilliant bowling from the Aussie pacers. Besides Rahul, Rishabh Pant scored 37 runs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 41 runs on his debut.
In reply, Bumrah scalped four wickets to reduce Australia to 67-7 at the end of Day 1. Mohammed Siraj scalped two wickets and the debutant Harshit Rana picked up the dangerous wicket of Travis Head. India will look to stamp their authority and dismiss the rest of the three wickets quickly on Day 2. They now hold a lead of 83 runs before the start of Day 2.
