Simona Halep has not had the best of starts to 2021. She commenced the year with the Australian Open, where she lost in the Quarter-finals. Following this defeat, Halep took some time off to recover physically. She next participated in the Miami Open. At the Miami Open, Halep withdrew in the second round citing a shoulder injury.
Another few weeks of break ensued before her next comeback at the Stuttgart Open. Halep started her clay court swing well. She remained injury free and reached the Semi-finals of the tournament. At the semi-finals she had to face a defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka. A straight set defeat 3-6 2-6.
Simona Halep calls Serena Williams her toughest opponent

Simona Halep has always loved playing the French open. She was a finalist at the event in 2014 and 2017 before finally winning the trophy in 2018. In 2014 she lost the Finals to Maria Sharapova, and in 2017 to Jelena Ostapenko. In 2018, she defeated Sloane Stephens of the USA to win her first French Open title.
Speaking to French Open Fans from around the World, Simona Halep took the time out and answered a few questions. On being asked who her toughest opponent is, she named Serena Williams. Halep said, ”Definitely it’s Serena Williams because she is huge in this sport, great champion, and it’s always tough emotional and physical to meet her.“
Apart from that, when asked who her idol in tennis is, Halep said, “Justine Henin. She was my idol for many years, and I was very happy to meet her two years ago.”
