Simona Halep decides against playing at the US Open

Simona Halep, the former world no.1 has decided nit to travel to play the US Open amidst the COVID-19 scare. Before flying off to Prague she confirmed, “I don’t know yet if I’ll go to America. In the current conditions, no!”

Another player declining to travel to the states will now make it evident that a lot of the professionals are concerned about the safety amidst the pandemic. The hike in cases each day in America has made most of the players uncomfortable. Thus they have denied risking their health along with their team. Halep now joins the list of top-ranked contenders withdrawing, namely Ashleigh Barty, Elina Svitolina, and Kiki Bertens.

Simona tested negative for COVID-19

Simona Halep is now the fourth player amongst the top 10 who has made a decision against traveling to America. She has been in an excellent form. But she will now miss the hard court season.

In an interaction with media at the Airport she said, “I wished a lot for the tournaments to start. I’m a little stressed out, but I think it will be fine. I took the test and got the result yesterday, negative, of course. When I arrive there today I’ll do another test and we’ll stay in the room until the result comes,”

Simona has been taking all the precautions while traveling to Prague, even though the cases there have been considerably low. Her positive attitude has helped her on the court and off the court speaking to the media too she seemed optimistic.

“A case can appear from anywhere, but I don’t want to think negatively. I want to see the good side and the fact that we can play tournaments. Maybe I wasn’t prepared mentally. Now I’m feeling better, so I am 100% convinced that I can play,” Halep added.

This is the first WTA tournament Simona Halep will be playing. She has traveled to Prague from her homeland Romania. However, her absence at the US Open will be felt but it just makes the draw for the others easier at the Grand Slam.
