Post her return to court, after injury, at the Stuttgart Open, Simona Halep had looked a little tentative to start with. In the Semi-finals she lost to Aryna Sabalenka without putting up a real fight, in straight sets 3-6 2-6. One could feel that wasn’t sure of her shoulder a hundred percent. But at the Madrid Open Simona Halep is looking sharp on court.

In her opening round encounter, she had defeated Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. Leading 6-0 5-2 at one point, Halep had to beat a late surge by Tormo to win 6-0 7-5. In the second round match against China’s Zheng Saisai, the World no.3 did not have any such problems. She won in straight sets 6-0 6-4. Halep is into the third round of the competition now. In the third round she will face World no.16 Elise Mertens of Belgium.

After her return from the shoulder injury she suffered at the Miami Open, Simona Halep is being extra cautious. In the clay court event at Stuttgart, where she reached the Semi-finals, she was taking one match at a time and testing her shoulder out match by match. The two time Madrid Open champion Simona Halep, is currently through to the third round of the Madrid Open.

On the sidelines of the event, Halep said, “I’m flowing b/c I’m on clay court. Always I feel much better. I’m hungry for matches, b/c I didn’t play for a long time. Now being here, being pain-free, it’s really nice. I feel happy that I can play close to my best tennis w/o pain. That makes me very happy.”
