Simona Halep has not been very active this year. She started the year with the Gippsland Trophy, where she lost in the Quarter-finals to Ekaterina Alexandrova. Following which she was beaten in the Quarter-finals of the Australian Open by Serena Williams. After that, Halep decided to take a small break from the tour. She came back in time for the Miami Open in America. At the Miami Open she sustained a shoulder injury and couldn’t take the court in the round of thirty-two encounter against Anastasija Sevastova

Post her first match at the Stuttgart Open she talked about coming back from injury after two weeks, Simona Halep said, “I had no pain today, and I’m really happy about that. I feel I’ve recovered very well with two weeks of break. I still think I’ll have to play more to see if my shoulder is ok.”

Simona Halep won the French Open in 2018, she won the Madrid Open in 2019, and the Italian Open in Rome in 2020. This is 2021, and Halep will like to win the Stuttgart Open and complete the holy quadruple on clay.

Halep faced Marketa Vondrousova in her first encounter of the Stuttgart Open 2021. Vondrousova is one of the few players who had a 100% record against Halep, she had beaten Halep in two previous encounters. Halep said after the match that she was a little nervous and scared of facing Vondrousova because of  her drop shots. But her aggressive game plan against Vondrousova worked well in the end as Halep won the match in just 57 mins, in straight sets, 6-1 6-3.

Simona Halep said, “I was a little bit nervous before the match because she’d beaten me every time,” Halep continued “I was a little bit scared of her drop shots, so he told me I’d have to be more aggressive today, which I did, and did it well. After the match, he told me I’d played well and he’s rarely seen me so aggressive. I played exactly how we’d talked about playing before the match.”
