“It is an honour”: Simone Biles, Megan Rapinoe named as recipients for Presidential Medal of Freedom

US gymnast Simone Biles and national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe will be presented with the nation’s highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. They will receive this honour by President Joe Biden at the White House in a ceremony next week. They are among the 17 people to be honoured, including Denzel Washington, Steve Jobs (posthumously), Sandra Lindsay being the most prominent.
Biles is the most decorated gymnast in the world, holding over 32 Olympic and World Championship medals. She has also been an outspoken advocate of mental health, as she has allowed people open up about their struggles. Megan Rapinoe is a two-time Women’s World Cup winner and 2012 Olympic gold medalist. She is a prominent advocate for gender pay equality, racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to those who “have overcome significant obstacles to achieve impressive accomplishments in the arts and sciences, dedicated their lives to advocating for the most vulnerable among us, and acted with bravery to drive change in their communities, and across the world, while blazing trails for generations to come,” the White House said.
At 25, Biles will also become the youngest civilian to receive this honour, while Rapinoe will be the first female soccer player to receive the medal. Several people across twitter celebrated the honour these female athletes were receiving for their great contribution to the world of women’s sports.
