With over 40 medals to her name across the Olympics and World Championships, Simone Biles is largely considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. After being forced to miss out on the Tokyo Olympics, she continued her mission to become the greatest ever at the Paris Olympics. With the American recently claiming her third gold medal at the event, it is getting increasingly difficult to make any cases against her.

Simone Biles competed in the Women’s Vault Gymnastics event at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. She performed the infamous “Biles II” as one of her routines, which ended up being one of the main factors behind her victory. The 27-year-old looked highly nervous prior to her run-up. However, she was able to nail the move with beautiful execution.

The audience burst out in a huge cheer as soon as she landed the move. Biles also seemed delighted by her achievement and walked away with a huge grin on her face.

She posted a final score of 15.3, which was sufficient for her to walk away with the first prize. This win marked her 7th gold medal at the Olympic Games and 10th overall. This victory came a mere two days after she won her second gold at the event on Thursday.

The event requires gymnasts to perform two different routines. A final score is then calculated based on the average of both scores. The American gymnast performed the Biles II as one of her routines, earning a score of 15.7 after a tenth of a point was cut due to her foot being out of bounds. Her second vault also received a staggering score of 14.9.

What is the Biles II Vault, and why was it named after American Gymnast Simone Biles?

Simone Biles has a total of five skills named after her in gymnastics. Two of these skills are on the floor, two of them are on the vault, and one is on the beam. One of these moves is the infamous Biles II, that helpled the American Gymnast win her tenth medal at the Olympic Games.

The Biles II is a Yurchenko-styled vault that comprises two flips in a pike position. She started publicly performing the move in 2021. It was officially named after her when she became the first gymnast to land it at an international competition in 2023. She was also seen practicing the move prior to the Paris Olympics.

Biles’s vault currently holds the highest difficulty rating in women’s gymnastics, valued at 6.4 points. Even if she does take an extra step, this high score helps her offset losing those points. The momentum generated through the move is so great that it becomes hard to stick the landing perfectly.
