Sixers president Daryl Morey using AI in key decisions amidst horrible season has fans livid: “That explains Paul George’s $200m deal”
Philadelphia 76ers President Daryl Morey is known to lean heavily on statistical and analytical data for roster decisions.

Daryl Morey uses AI for Philadelphia 76ers decisions
The Philadelphia 76ers are not having the season they had hoped for. Injuries to Joel Embiid and Paul George have destroyed any chance of fulfilling their goal of competing for the NBA title. President Daryl Morey had assembled this team hoping it would change the franchise’s trajectory.
When the team was healthy, they showed glimpses of what could be possible. But along those lines, some have been critical of how Embiid and George have performed when they were on the court. Some believe now the team are not the sum of their parts as it was projected in the offseason.
There were rumors that Daryl Morey did not understand the basketball philosophy in assembling this team. During the season, Stephen A. Smith revealed that the owner of the Houston Rockets threw Morey out after he used analytics to prove he was right even though the results said otherwise.
The 52-year-old has always been known for extensively using statistics in his work. Knowing that, Pablo Torre, host of Pablo Torre Finds Out asked Daryl Morey if he uses AI in his work. To this the President of the Philadelphia 76ers said.
We absolutely use models as a vote in any decision.

He went on to add that they use various AI models in drafting players and also while recruiting free agents. Morey did however add that not all models are capable to outdo human analysis. But he is developing some LLM’s which can in future be capable of avoiding errors.
Fans lose it listening to Daryl Morey’s work with AI
Fans are aware that Billy Beane and the Moneyball transformation has forced teams to embrace statistics into their approach to games. But there are many, such as Charles Barkley, who openly criticize the use of analytics. He believes a computer cannot see what human scouts can, therefore the chances of errors are high.
Fans believe the errors from Daryl Morey’s use of statistics and AI is what has caused the Philadelphia 76ers to have such a horrible season. They cannot find the logic of assembling such an expensive team, only to be hampered by injuries. Check out examples those comments below.

Wow he really is worthless, A.I. said to give him that contract too? Can’t make this stuff up.

Makes sense considering everything 76ers are going through

This is false because even AI could make better decisions than him

Fans feel his overuse of analytics has possible throttled the team’s chances of being competitive. Especially as analytics probably did not factor in the injuries their top two players have suffered for much of their careers. Now this overuse of analytics could turn disastrous.
Paul George could also end season early
Joel Embiid is already out for the season after deciding to fix his knee ahead of next season. That loss alone was enough to send the Philadelphia 76ers spiraling downwards. Now it seems Paul George is on a similar path as Shams Charania reported.
Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George is consulting with doctors this week on treatment options for his groin and knee injuries, including a possible procedure, sources tell ESPN. A decision is expected early next week.
Shams Charania wrote
If George believes a procedure is necessary for his persistent injury problems, it could end his season early. Only seventeen games remain in the regular season. Even if he does continue, their recent form suggests the Philadelphia 76ers will not make the playoffs.

It would benefit the team if their 34-year-old star goes ahead with the procedure. Then he will be able to recover over the offseason. Eventually, he can return fully rehabilitated along with Joel Embiid next season.
