Japanese figure skating star Yuzuru Hanyu left his fans wondering if they would ever get to see him compete again on Monday. This took place when millions tuned in live for his news conference on the sidelines of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

Earlier, the 27-year-old fell short of his stated mission to clinch a third straight Olympic men’s title in Beijing. Although he ended up placing fourth, his popularity remained unmatched with at least six million Chinese viewers watching a live stream of his appearance over social media sites Weibo and Tencent.

While addressing the media, the Miyagi native Hanyu reckoned that he’s still unsure if the Beijing Games is his last multinational tournament.

If you ask me whether these were my last Games, I don’t know“, Hanyu said with a sly smile during the presser at Beijing 2022 that was televised live nationally in Japan.

“There’s a part of me that wants to skate here again”

Yuzuru Hanyu further went on to pour his heart out and revealed the special place of the Olympic Games. He mentioned that “there’s a part of me that does want to skate here again.”

“The Olympics is a special place, one of a kind. It’s a competition, a challenge, that you want to take on even if you’re hurt.

“There’s no other place like that for a figure skater. There is a part of me that does want to skate here again,” he added

It gave me a deep sense of happiness to be here, and there’s a part of me that wants to skate here again,” said Hanyu, who trained at a practice rink earlier in the day.
