After a year’s hiatus, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick returned to football, albeit in a different role than what everyone knew him in. The six-time winning coach, second only to Paul Brown for most NFL titles as a head coach, joined the UNC Tar Heels ahead of the season start.
In the meantime, he has not left the mainstream media’s eyes. Belichick’s high-profile relationship with model Jordon Hudson has been a key talking point for the past few months. The latest loss to the TCU Horned Frogs has invited more criticism for Belichick. The Horned Frogs scored 48 on the Tar Heels, the most any team has scored against a team coached by Belichick.
The incidents amid the game, including Hudson’s arrival on the sidelines during the game, have added to increased scrutiny. The FS1 analyst Skip Bayless ripped into Belichick and claimed that he has been an overrated coach since before. Bayless claimed that the quarterback, Tom Brady, was the reason behind the six Super Bowl wins.
Bayless admitted that he thought Brady’s game-winning drives in the fourth quarter led to the Patriots’ win all along. He also presented the statistics of Belichick with and without Brady. Belichick, who coached the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995 and the Patriots following Brady’s exit, lost more games than the ones he won.
I have always thought he was overrated because he was mostly a product of Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. I’m giving 75% of the credit to Tom Brady…With Tom Brady, as head coach in the NFL, Bill Belichick went 249 and 75…Without Brady, Bill Belichick, as a head coach in the National Football League, went 83 and 104. He lost 104 games.

Bayless also highlighted that the four seasons Belichick coached the Pats without Brady. Belichick famously ended his era with just one playoff game in those four years. The single playoff game was against the Buffalo Bills, the game that previously held the record of most points scored against a team coached by Belichick. The analyst also brought up the fact that former coach Don Shula’s famous “Beli-cheat” accusations.
Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels look to bounce back against the Charlotte 49ers
Bill Belichick’s debut as North Carolina’s head coach didn’t go as planned. The Tar Heels went down massively to the Horned Frogs at Chapel Hill. Now, as they prepare for an in-state matchup against Charlotte, Belichick and his team are looking to regroup, reset, and capture the first win of the new era.

Outside of a promising opening drive, the Heels managed just 222 total yards and coughed up the ball three times. Charlotte presents a chance to regain confidence. The 49ers surrendered more than 500 yards to Appalachian State in their opener and generated little pressure up front, recording just a single sack. The Heels have an opportunity to bolster their offense, which was on its back foot last match.
Belichick has yet to confirm who will start under center. Sophomore Lucas Lopez got the nod against TCU, but Max Johnson provided a spark in relief. Perhaps the biggest question is not Xs and Os, but how Belichick’s squad responds mentally. UNC was battered physically and emotionally in Week 1, and now must prove they can rebound quickly on a short turnaround.
The UNC Tar Heels have previously played the 49ers in 2024, their first meeting in history. The Tar Heels emerged victorious in that meeting, beating the 49ers 38-20 after QB Conner Harrell threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Interestingly enough, Harrell now starts for the 49ers. Whether he can repeat the same performance and win the game for the 49ers is yet to be seen.
