Chris Paul compared to Gregg Popovich by Skip Bayless
The NBA legends drafted in the 2000s are nearing retirement, and the new rookies are yet to match the standards set by these stars. However, comparisons and analyses of stars like Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Russell Westbrook continue day after day because of their ongoing impact and performance.
Recently, on The Skip Bayless Show, news anchor Skip Bayless made a somewhat bizarre comparison between CP3 and Spurs HC Gregg Popovich. He mentioned that watching Chris Paul last year was underwhelming and also stated that CP3’s career might be winding down.
However, he claimed that with Paul joining the Spurs to play alongside rookie of the year Victor Wembanyama, his experience and basketball IQ will be the most significant assets he brings to the table, perhaps even more valuable that what coach Popovich could bring.
Chris Paul is a better coach than Gregg Popovich or more of a player-coach that can teach Wembanyama. During the next year Chris Paul will be more valuable than the legendary Gregg Popovich.Skipp Bayless claimed
Gregg failed to harness Wembanyama’s potential as the Spurs lost 60 games, despite Wembanyama leading the league in blocked shots during the regular season. It’s quite surprising that the esteemed Gregg Popovich couldn’t leverage the team’s talent and experience to win matches, resulting in only 26 wins last season.
But with the addition of Paul to the lineup, Bayless believes Gregg might have a better chance at teaching the rookies and other first-round picks about the dynamics of winning games in the NBA. Paul’s experience could make him more of an on-court coach than a player, especially considering his performance last season with the Warriors.
Chris Paul could be the bridge between Coach Pop and the Wembanyama
Having the rookie of the year in the starting lineup and still falling significantly behind in the playoffs is a major setback for legendary coach Gregg Popovich. Much speculation about this mismatch is focused on their age gap.
But with the arrival of Chris Paul, he is believed to be the bridge between Gregg and Wembanyama. At 39 years old, Paul also has much to prove. As a starter for the Spurs, CP3 serves as the best on-court mentor for the raw young talent on the team. Paul can effectively address the team’s shortcomings in not having a true point guard in the lineup.

Having not won a single title in his entire career, Paul is desperate to prove himself in the NBA and aims to achieve this by mentoring and playing alongside the youth in San Antonio. While Chris Paul’s reputation as a player precedes him, it remains to be seen how he will blend into this young team and bridge the gap between Coach Popovich’s vision and today’s youngsters.
