- Skip Bayless suggests deeper issues in the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini situation beyond affair rumors.
- He highlights a culture of favoritism in sports media where connections can influence reporting.
- The Athletic has sidelined Russini amid ongoing scrutiny following the emergence of private photos.
Skip Bayless has been part of the sports media circle since the middle of the 1970s. During his long career as a journalist and columnist for well-known newspapers like the Dallas Morning News, Miami Herald, and Los Angeles Times, Bayless saw a behavior in his male and female coworkers that is still relevant today.
Incidentally, Bayless theorized that the scandal involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini may have similar routes.
Speaking on a recent segment of the Arena Gridiron, Bayless noted that the colleagues at his previous workplaces established connections with coaches and players to gain favors and the latest scoop. Of course, it’s a two-way arrangement. The coaches and players, in return, demand leniency in extreme cases.
If I have a bad game, you kind of gloss over that… If I misbehave a little bit off the field and I get tripped up in something, you are not going to try and run me out of town over that.
Skip Bayless said
Bayless respects Russini and the work she does for The Athletic, a unit of The New York Times. However, at the same time, he highlighted the series of events leading up to the scandal, notably the AJ Brown trade rumors.
The Patriots are among the teams linked to the Super Bowl winner due to his shared history with Vrabel. Brown spent the initial years of his league career with the Tennessee Titans during Vrabel’s era. Russini pushed the narrative that the Patriots desperately need Brown’s services following the departure of Stefon Diggs after just one year in New England.
[Russini] has been out front in reporting on AJ Brown’s issues in Philadelphia and then if you wanna put 2+2 together, is he bound for New England at some point with coach Vrabel?

The trade window remains open, but the Eagles are likely to keep hold of Brown for at least one more year.
On April 8, photos belonging to Vrabel, who recently celebrated his 26th wedding anniversary, surfaced with a woman other than his wife, Jen. The woman in question turned out to be Russini, who is also married and is mother of two.
The Athletic backed both Vrabel and Russini when they downplayed the photos. But as time went on, even more private pictures made their way online. The Athletic launched an internal investigation and sidelined Russini for the time being.
Mike Vrabel receives disappointing update ahead of the NFL draft
The 2026 NFL draft is set to commence on April 23 in Pittsburgh and will end on April 25. Before the first day of the draft, NFL coaches and general managers face reporters and discuss their draft strategies and the players they may or may not select.

Vrabel was supposed to represent the Patriots, seeing that he’s the head coach. However, the Patriots announced that the 50-year-old is going to skip the pre-draft press conference, leaving GM Eliot Wolf to handle the proceedings.

He isn’t expected to address reporters until the draft, as fallout continues from the Dianna Russini controversy.
The Patriots appointed Vrabel as the head coach ahead of the 2025 season. In his first season, Vrabel led the New England franchise to the Super Bowl after winning the AFC East, wildcard, divisional playoff, and the conference title game.
In the final, the Pats faced the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Drake Maye was sacked 6 times, leading to four turnovers, including two interceptions. The Seahawks won 29-13 and prevented the Patriots from lifting the club’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.
