In Short
  • Skip Bayless claims George Pickens cannot be trusted as a winning player or team leader.
  • Bayless advises the Dallas Cowboys to move on from Pickens due to concerns about his off-field behavior.
  • Aqib Talib argues that teams can succeed with 'diva' players if they perform well on the field.

After several teams started making roster moves, the Dallas Cowboys fans have been wondering how Jerry Jones is managing to negotiate a fresh contract for free agent WR George Pickens.

During his lone season with America’s Team, the 24-year-old racked up career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He hopes that he can convince the billionaire owner to hand him a significant raise over his last salary.

He made all of $3,658,205 with the Cowboys in what was the final year of his rookie contract. Many believe this number will go up at least six times, if not more.

That would put him in the AJ Brown, Ja’Marr Chase territory. However, longtime fan of the franchise, Skip Bayless, does not think the Georgia alum deserves it.

In the end, George Pickens, you can’t trust him to be a winning football player or a team leader… I don’t think the rest of the team loved it that he was constantly late to meetings. That’s just who he is. That’s why Mike Tomlin said no to him.

Skip Bayless said on The Arena

The 74-year-old reiterated that had George Pickens been a model citizen, he would have been the loudest supporter when asking Jerry Jones to give the WR a good deal.

However, Bayless is worried the Alabama native’s antics could tear the team apart in the future. He does not believe the Cowboys should bend to fan and media pressure and give Pickens a contract they would eventually regret.

Super Bowl champion counters Skip Bayless’ argument about George Pickens

After Skip Bayless gave his opinion, both as a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys and as a journalist, Super Bowl 50 champion Aqib Talib did not agree with his logic.

Everybody on the team don’t have to be a leader, Skip. You just need a handful of leaders, you need some goons. If I got a guy who can show up to the game and dominate. Hey, if he is late to meetings, it is what it is… It ain’t my problem. Once he gets on the field balling, I’m with him.

The former cornerback believes that in every team, there are a handful of players who are genuine leaders, and in the Cowboys’ instance, as Bayless mentioned, they have CeeDee Lamb as the leader of that receiving core.

Then, there are some so-called ‘diva’ players, whose off-field tendencies are usually covered by their on-field production. Owners, coaches, and teammates generally ignore those antics as long as the player is dominating on the field.

Hearing this, a fellow former NFL player and The Arena colleague, Richie Incognito, agreed, mentioning that the Cowboys need George Pickens more than critics think.

Jerry Jones makes further room for potential George Pickens offer

With cap space at a premium for the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones has to get creative if he wants his team to be successful next season. As of now, his team is still $25 million over the cap.

But he still needs to sign some players, and the first order of business was to ensure breakout running back Javonte Williams stayed with the team. He signed the term sheet for a three-year deal worth $24 million.

If anything, for a running back who just amassed 1200 yards, that is a bargain, as he could have demanded more with any other franchise desperate for some production in that area.

It seems Jones is doing everything needed to keep the core intact, while creating enough room to make a major offer to George Pickens, as the WR has indicated he will not play under the franchise tag.
