Skip Bayless isn’t thrilled about the Pittsburgh Steelers bringing in Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, believing it could pave the way for Aaron Rodgers to make a return. McCarthy and Rodgers share a connection from their time in Green Bay.
When Mike Tomlin stepped away from the Steelers HC job after another disappointing playoff campaign, most Steelers fans, including two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, urged the hire-ups to appoint a young and offensive-minded head coach. However, owner Art Rooney and general manager Omar Khan decided on lifelong Yinzer and proven tactician Mike McCarthy.
McCarthy received his coaching education at the University of Pittsburgh, just down the road from the Steelers HQ. He coached at various franchises, including the Packers and the Cowboys.
At Green Bay, he won a Super Bowl ring and established a winning culture before departing for Dallas. The Cowboys reaped the benefits and were among the better NFC teams for the better part of four years. After a year away from football, McCarthy became a legit contender for the Steelers’ job.
On Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Brooke Pryor confirmed that Pittsburgh is close to finalizing the paperwork to appoint McCarthy as the new head coach.
It didn’t take long for Bayless to drop a remark on X. The former FOX Sports contributor called the marriage between McCarthy and the Steelers “a bad idea.”
It won’t work… Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers did one great thing together long ago, in a galaxy far away, in Green Bay… I think the [Steelers] want [Rodgers] back, and I think he wants to go back, obviously now reuniting with Mike McCarthy… Aaron [Rodgers] is now washed up, but the Steelers can’t let him go.

Bayless has never liked Rodgers, or at least since his vaccine controversy days. He opposed the Steelers’ signing of the four-time NFL MVP and expressed concern about McCarthy possibly retaining Rodgers as his quarterback for the 2026 season.
Rodgers and McCarthy didn’t end things on a high note near the tail end of his career in Wisconsin. The Packers missed the playoffs, and both individuals went their separate ways. Jerry Jones picked up McCarthy, and Rodgers chose the glamor of the Big Apple.
There’s a world where Rodgers makes a comeback and snags another ring, but he’s closing in on 43. Plus, he’s already told the media that 2025 would be his final year in football.
There was belief in the building that hiring Mike McCarthy could bring Aaron Rodgers back in the fold. Now we’ll see what the QB does. https://t.co/7Y5kBrJKV0

Skip Bayless warns the Steelers about Mike McCarthy
McCarthy was let go by the Cowboys after a 7-10 season that saw them miss the playoffs. Before that, the Cowboys enjoyed three straight 12-5 finishes with Dak Prescott constantly in the mix for the league MVP conversation.

Big Mike is a competent coach with a proven track record, and he understands the Pittsburgh culture better than his competitors. Sure, it’s unlikely that he will stick around for 18 years like Mike Tomlin, because he’s a decade older, but that doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy success while he’s in the Steel City.
Bayless doesn’t think so.
Mike McCarthy is just blah to me. A bump on a sideline log. I don’t think he’s going to bring the Steelers back to the living as the polar opposite of Mike Tomlin. Forgive me, Steeler Nation.

Fans will eventually witness the state of the Steelers franchise within a few months. The decision on Rodgers might take longer because he likes to play the waiting game. If he retires or decides to join another team, the Steelers will need to find a new quarterback or stick with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.
