The Olympics are a highly emotionally charged event for the athletes. They go through an unbelievable amount of stress, and nervousness is at an all-time high. Everybody has their own way of relaxing and calming their nerves. However, two athletes named Ana Carolina Vieira and Gabriel Santos might have taken things a little too far.
Vieira and her boyfriend, Santos, sneaked out of the Paris Olympic Village one night without informing any of their team members. Both of these athletes are part of the Brazilian swimming contingent sent to Paris for the Olympic Games.
Their violation was only discovered when the couple shared pictures of their night out on their social media handles. Santos was given a warning after the incident and allowed to stay with the team in Paris. However, the Brazilian Olympic Committee decided to send Vieira home after she contested their decision.
In a statement later released by BOC, they said that the 22-year-old acted disrespectfully and aggressively. She had contested a technical decision made by the Brazilian National Swimming Committee. Therefore, Vieira had been dismissed from the Brazilian delegation of the Paris Olympics. Furthermore, she was to return to Brazil immediately.
Brazilian Swimming Team Leader Gustavo Otsuka speaks about the actions of Ana Carolina Vieira and Gabriel Santos
Vieira was a part of the Brazilian swimming team for the 4x100m swimming relay held on Saturday. The team placed 12th and the event was won by the Australians. The Brazilian swimming team leader, Gustavo Otsuka, was disappointed with the performance, and even more frustrated by the actions of the couple.
Otsuka believed that the Brazilian delegation was responsible for working for their country and the 200 million taxpayers who had helped them reach such a stage. He believed that there was no room to mess around.
We can’t play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to make her point, her dismay, about the formation of the relay.
Gustavo Otsuka said
Otsuka believed that Vieira acted in a highly inappropriate manner when challenging the decision of the BOC. Thus, the situation eventually went to the disciplinary committee, who discussed it among themselves and took the necessary action. He also revealed that they only found out about their offense through the pictures shared by the couple on their social media.
